One of the really great pump shotguns. Bottom feed and eject, fine design and close tolerances. Shoot it long and often. Never sell it, only pass it down to the next generation when the time comes.

The old model 37 is one of the great American shotguns. Simple, reliable, accurate, and will still be all that after we're too old to shoot it anymore.
Heck, just being that it's your grandpa's gun makes it a treasure!

So when comparing it to the only shot gun I have ever shot, a Benelli Nova, what is it like?

Kind of like comparing a fine vintage Colt 1911 and a Glock. Both are good handguns, but the 1911 is machined from solid blocks of steel and hand fit in the traditional way, and the other uses more modern manufacturing methods and materials.
There is probably no finer pump gun than a vintage M37. There are other great pumps, like the model 12 and the Wingmaster, but the Ithaca is my favorite hunting pump.

I talked to my dad again and found out that this gun was made in the 50's does this gun have the barrel that can only be changed by a gun smith judging by the aproximate date?

Hope that gives you some more information. I have one that is similar to the stakeout.

Thanks for the link, I like their logo.
I like their model 37.
That is about the only thing I own that has that name.
I'll have to look into what they are building now.
I am not sure if anyone looked at the link I put up, so I'll post this part of it.:uhoh:
The largest single user outside the US Military is the Los Angeles Police Department.
Along with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department,
I wonder if there is a reason for this (behind the scenes and all that)...:scrutiny:

I can't wait to get it. I should have it some time next week along with a 20 gauge side-by-side. Do any of you know of a spanish brand shotgun with a long name. At least 30-40 years old, fairly expensive. I am trying to figure out what brand it is.

If you have long enough arms, it's GREAT!

Great for lefty's. My dad bought me one over 20 years ago and I love that gun. An Ithaca is a true treasure. As good as any 870 out there.

Smoothest action in pumpdom. I wish I had my uncle's old 16 I used to borrow to duck hunt with. Wow, what a fine shotgun that was.
IMHO, the 37 is way far better than any 870, but then I'm not one of the 870 worshippers around here. I've owned an 870, I sold it. I have a Mossberg now. Both are fine shooting field guns, cheap, nothing special. The 37 stands heads above either. I also like the Browning BPS which is a little heavier gun, but has a tang safety with the same smooth, slick, action. I consider pumps as working guns, cheap and effective, but there are pumps and then there are pumps. Listen to some of these guys around here, you'd think an 870 would beat anything from Krieghoff at trap shooting.

Harley, when Ithaca brought out its Deerslayer variant of the 37, it was well received by the public and the military. The bore was undersized for better accuracy with the slugs of the day and oft patterned well with buck. Point men in the Nam Mess acquired them and praised them. This led to the LAPD trying them out. Once they had a few thousand, bureaucratic inertia kept them going.
The 37, with or without the slam fire feature, is a darn good fighting shotgun.

MC, that does happen. It's the Injun, not the arrow.

I've had my browning bps since the first year they came out, and love it dearly. Picked up my first 37 last year, $250 used. Its a 20 ga. feather, which I got for the son. Feel like I'm cheating on my faithful bps, but I keep picking up the 37 when it's time to go shoot...

Yes Dave, but then if you give the best Indian the best arrow...... :D
I just get a kick out of all the 870 worship here. I never in all my days thought the 870 was anything special. It's just a working man's pump, just like the Mossy, pretty much the same market for the same price range. Then, I come on here and you'd think the 870 was some sort of God's answer to shotgunning. ROFLMAO! I like Remington guns, don't misunderstand, have really nothing against 870s other than I really prefer the Mossberg as a left handed waterfowler (the tang safety, ya know), but, as Remingtons go, I think I'd rather have one of the new Remington CTis if I could afford it. :D
Lots of self defense shotgunners here what like the tacticool thing. The 870 shines in that category. But, I'm just an old bird hunter and tend to think that way. I ain't got no flashlights on my shotguns. If I wanted to take a shotgun to war, I'd probably pick an 870, but not if I could get a combat equipped high cap M37.
