I've been checking this piece out on the web reciently but like most of the guns Ive had my eye on I havent seen them in any shops. Anyone have anything to say about these? They look pretty nice and also alot less expensive than alot of S&Ws.

I have a 3953 which differs in that it has an aluminum frame and is DAO but the size and caliber are quite similar. I really love mine and its my primary CCW gun. Its light and thin, accurate and reliable. What's not to like?
The truth is 3rd generation Smith autos just don't get no respect.
Glocks and the plastic frame clones created such a wave that all the old metal frame autos have just been forgotten. I've always been the kind that goes the opposite direction of the rest of the herd and I've been trying to buy as many of the Smith autos as I can before the rest of the herd finds out. and drives the prices up. :neener:

I have heard some folks don't like the newest S&W metal frame guns. Go to www.summitgunbroker.com and pick up at used 5906 instead. Great gun, great price. Do a search here on THR for the 5906 and you'll find an overwhelming number of positive comments.

The 910,915,etc. were part of the Smith and Wesson "Value series" marketing campaign from a while back. Good guns. Kinda similar to what Kahr did with the "CW" series or the Maverick line from Mossberg. Take a good gun, simplify production to lower price, and market it as a low cost option.

Used-Smith and Wessons (pistols) are easy to find cheap because the police trade in market floods the market with cheap guns.

I posted a link to a feew 2nd gen 9s that are $225 each-it's in the handguns for sale area.

The quality on Smiths is much higher than the price suggests.

Any idea on what they cut back on to make it cheaper? The gun itself looks pretty nice to me. I've been looking for a decently priced reliable 9mm to add to my collection (that would make 2) I already made another thread on the subject. Most said the CZ-75 is the all around best choice in my price range. I saw this Smith at buds and wanted to see if anyone had any experience with it that slide release looks kind of klunky and snaggable in the picture other than that it looks pretty nice.

Smiths Autos are great guns.
My only "deal" is my personal time spent over too many years with a 1911, and BHP and the operation of safety and where located.

These 910s, 3913s and such were really popular with CCW students especially with Used Police trade ins being priced as they were.

Fit a lot of hands really well, and students shot them well in trying out a variety of guns.
Oh how we liked the low bid of Glock in the early days, these S&Ws were a steal!

Lots and Lots of folks liked the idea of a safety. Fine. We covered all that assisting, and used revolvers as example of not having a safety, and 4 rules...and

I/we respected these students. If a single mom shoots a S&W best, and she feels better with a safety over a Glock that does not, and the price is a lot better than a new Glock.
Go for it!

A hubby comes in and has fence sitter wife and ...well...his gun should look "nice" and she feels better seeing a safety...again go for it.
Not to mention, holsters at the time were being gotten rid of at a great price along with mags.

I was given 3913 by some UC LEOs, they carried these.
Five spare mags and two holsters.
I used mine as a instruction and range gun for new folks.
I was also given ~ 5K round of lead 9mm rounds.
No problem.

Years later, and who knows how many rounds later , one of the UC daughters really wanted a 3913, and I gave her mine for a 18th B-Day present.
She reached 21, got a CCW and this was her CCW.

Instead of a round top slide and locking lugs on the barrel, they made it with a SIG/Glock-like square slide and barrel lockup on an ejection port shoulder. This requires fewer machining operations. There is not quite as much metal polishing on the finish. That's about it, to my knowledge. It is not "cheaper" as in the "cheesy" sense of the word.

A 910 should take the 15-round magazines of the 915 and 59xx pistols. There is no point in living in AZ in this day and age and not having the full capacity the gun was designed for. ;)

Sounds like a pretty good choice, I'm gonna have to put it in my top 9mms I can afford along with the CZ-75 and the Baby Eagle. WHat would you think would be the best choice out of the 3? Alot of people say the cz trigger is bad out of the box but people also say that about my GP compared to smiths, 300 rounds through it and a little lube and the trigger is real smooth. I'm sure the same can be said about any well built pistol whether its an auto loader or a wheelgun

Smith is the best value(used)- but I hate the slide mounted safety! Dao not an option for me either... The other two are a little more- but I like them more for ergonomic reasons.

My friend Geoff got me thinking about the P-40 from CZ- claims it has a better than average trigger. The CZ's (and the 1 baby eagle) I've shot had decent triggers. :)

Takeiteasy....
