I read a gun rag article that mentioned the author likes using 147 grain .38 special +P.

Isn't that a 9mm weight, not a .38 special weight?

Or is there a .38 special +P in 147 that I don't know about?

I've used Federal 147 gr +P+ in guns rated for 357. Note I'm saying +P+ which is hotter than +P and as I understand there is no SAAMI standard for +P+. The link vanilla gorilla provides most of the info of this round. It's more than a +P but less than a magnuim basically.

It's more commonly seen in 9mm but a manufacturer can make up any bullet weight they want. The newer CCI/Speer 135 gr JHP is an example. I've seen factory 38 specials with bullet weights from 95 to 200 grains.

Federal historically has been conservative in their +P+ rating on that round. One department I know had Federal send them pressure test data on a production run of it, and none of the rounds exceeded SAAMI specs. Federal told them since it was right on the line, they went with a +P+ marking to be on the safe side.
