Here's the post-dispatch article:

Holden vetoes House concealed gun measure (http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/News/86256C7E00525A1B86256D5800697BC4?OpenDocument&Headline=Holden+vetoes+House+concealed+gun+measure)

The part which my blood boiling is the quote from (St. Louis) Police Chief Joe Mokwa:

I can tell you this: Confronting an armed criminal is not for the general public.

Apparently, what IS for the general public is to lay down and be robbed, killed, raped, etc. - because that is obviously a much better option.

I recommend that all Missourians contact their state representatives and senators. If they voted for HB349 originally, thank them for their past support and let them know their constituents are behind them to override Holden's veto this September. If they voted against HB349, then politely but firmly encourage them to add their support to overriding this veto. Then, mark your calendars and contact them again in early September, prior to the veto override session.

Finally, contact St. Louis' police chief Joe Mokwa and let him know that you do not appreciate the suggestion that citizens should resign themselves to be passive victims to crime.

``What we've seen from other places is that it is more likely that someone will be injured either in anger or by accidental discharge by having more small weapons available than the unlikely event that crime will be deterred,'' said Vicky Riback Wilson, D-Columbia. OK, Ms. Wilson, since you're from the "Show Me" state . . . Show your constituents ANY evidence that this ridiculous statement is true. Let's see:

". . . injured either in anger . . ." - see readily availble stats from Florida & Texas (among others) showing the extreme rarity of permits being revoked and the even smaller number of those that involved firearms offenses.

". . . or by accidental discharge . . ." - see readily available stats showing the decreasing number of firearm accidents over the past couple of decades.

". . . unlikely event that crime will be deterred." - see readily available stats showing the number of defensive gun uses each year
