If you mean through one of the gun auction sites, I believe you

1. Choose a local gun shop who is willing to accept a shipment for you, usually for a fee. If he handles this type of business, he will be familiar with the procedure for sending a copy of his FFL to the seller.
2. Purchase the gun by whatever on-line auction you are using. Sometimes you have to win by being the highest bidder. Sometimes it is possible to pay a "buy now" price and skip the auction process.
3. Arrange for payment. This can vary, but usually you pay the seller using a credit card, or PayPal.
4. Give the seller the name, address and telephone number of your gun shop. The seller prepares the gun for shipment and gets a copy of the shop's FFL.
5. Wait patiently.
6. When your gun shop calls you (or email...), go pick it up. This is usually when you pay the "shop fee" (maybe $25 to $50) and fill out any required forms.

Before yo order a new gun online, visit your local shops, just maybe they will order the same gun at the same price and you will save shipping and transfer fees.

Yeah, shop local unless it's something that's unique.
You have to visit the shop before your gun arrives to fill out paperwork and pay fees and oh yeah, there's that pesky waiting period that doesn't begin until you fill out a 4473 and are approved.
