11-87 trigger plate pin blocked by feed latch spring (Help!)

I've been trying to reassemble a Rem 11-87P after cleaning it for the first time, but the smaller of the two trigger plate pins is partially blocked by the long leaf spring inside the receiver. (The other end of this leaf spring forms the feed latch)

The hole in the spring is not perfectly aligned with the hole in the receiver, forming a very small crescent-shaped obstruction of the hole. This obstruction is enough to prevent me from re-inserting either the side-saddle mounting bolt or the original small trigger plate pin.

The leaf spring does not seem to be designed to move back and forth, so I have no idea how it could have moved to partially block the receiver hole while I was cleaning the shotgun.

Pounding away on the bolt or the pin to force it past the obstruction does not sound like a great idea.

Any ideas on what I should do?

I would suggest assembling the shotgun as far as you can go, including inserting the trigger assembly pins.
From the 'off side' take either a small screwdriver or a small brass punch and move the shell latch back into position. (Preferably, a small brass punch.)
Use it as an alignment tool.

The shell latch(es) are staked into position and may have come loose.

My 1100 Magnum did this very thing, years ago.

No big problem. Just a little annoyance.

IHTH.

The shell latches are set into channels machined into the inside of the receiver, then staked in place. Sounds like one of yours has slipped a little in its channel.

It is best to try and slip it back into the proper place with the trigger plate assembly in place in the receiver to support it, as noted above. What you don't want to do is completely dislodge the shell latch- not a good thing.

Good luck with it,
