Good. Solid. Reliable. Although a little on the heavy side for me. Best features, tang safety and bottom ejection.

I have one i bought brand new in 28 ga and also one in 12 guage as an old beater(bought it at such). I havent found a pump action gun i like any better. Smooth operation and reliable as can be.

what makes them better (worth the extra cost) than, say a remington 870 or mossberg 500? Or are you just paying for the browning name/reputation? I know it has the bottom ejection (I think they bought the patent from Ithaca years ago), but are there other substantial differences or just personal preference?

The operation of the gun is much smoother then a mossberg or remington. it also has a steel reciever which i like. The sefety is on the "tang" location like the mossberg, but it is metal and you dont have to worry about it breaking unlike the plastic one on the mossberg. As stated ablove, bottom ejection is escpecially nice for the lefties. And for me it fits and points very well. So for me ill give it a two thumbs up.

I just recently purchased a BPS in 10ga. It's a brute of a gun. It hurts with a recoil pad, a shoulder-pad (PAST recoil pad) and painkillers. I'm pretty sure it hurts to watch someone shoot it, too.

i've played with a BPS at a store once and didnt think the action was much better than my 870 wingmaster....it is abit better than a basic express 870 tho, but a worn in action is smooth reguardless.
i do like that they make a 10 gauge pump tho... probly hurts tho as mentioned above lol

"Hurts" is an understatement. It liquefies bone and muscle, causes permanent deafness, and causes concussions.... for the people watching.
Shooting it is like being hit with a rocket-powered sledgehammer.
I still went through 50 rounds in one range visit. All 00 buck, 3 1/2" magnum loads.

I have a BPS & love it. I find it to be light enough. The action is pretty smooth. I do think action smoothness is more noticable when not actually shooting. Unless of course it feels defective, then it can distract you. When I bought mine a factor was my friend was a lefty & he could shoot it. But he could shoot a regular 1100 so it was not major.
Had a Mossberg. I just liked the BPS better. Not really a fair comparison. The Mossberg was an entry level pump & the BPS was a nicer grade. Vented Rib on BPS no rib on Mossberg.
I like it better than the 870. Mainly the controls were not what I was used to. I never spent a lot of time on the 870 though. I loved the 1100 & everyone I knew had them instead of an 870 or BPS. As the previous poster mentioned the 870 come in different grades so give the 870 a look. Some feel much heavier than others.
That's my take on it. My BPS fits me so that is a big plus. It patterned well on every load I checked with it. I got mine before choke tubes were common. Semi-Auto weren't as slick as they are now either.
I rather the thumb safety. I met a guy a while back that had a BPS & hated everything about it. His first complaint was the thumb saftey.

bps are pretty frustrating to tear-down and put together.
I used to rebuild diesel injection pumps and turbos in my 12+ year diesel mechanic career (paying the child support;)) - the bps gave me fits on the very first try to reassemble. About 2 hrs worth of trouble, can reassemble one in about 2 minutes now.
There is a 10ga sitting in the corner, along with a 12ga 3 1/2" model in this room and a 12ga 3" downstairs- just hanging out.
The 10ga was bought for geese- works great- but kills on one end and maims on the other.
Have about a half dozen boxes of OOO buckshot ( never seen OO for them:rolleyes:)-never fired any, but fired several hundred (thousand?) 1 3/8oz 1500fps BB handloads, 30" barrel swings like a phonepole, but tracks like a sidewinder. 26" barrels on the 10/12ga 3 1/2" receivers is about the right length for most applications. Have 26" barrel on the gold-lite 10ga. love it
Like 700 rifles, don't like 870 shotguns see my handle. ( but an 11/87 with a 10 shot mag extension is the PERFECT snow geese gun:evil:)
