I have a CMP Garand. I've field stripped it numerous times but never completely detail stripped it. I had a friend over who trained on the Garand many years ago and wanted to try his hand. Well, he got the trigger group out fine but couldn't get it back in, and now neither can I.

The trigger guard is no longer flexing as it does when you take it out of the stock. The pin on top of the loop at the back of the trigger guard is stuck.

Is it safe to try to pry it out, or is there some secret I'm missing? I feel really stupid.

Do not ever take a steel tool and try to "pry" on your treasured Garand.

What exactly is the problem? It sounds as if perhaps the triggere group has been opened, removed from the stock and barrel/action group, and then closed again.

If so, the way to open it would be to pull backward on the rear of the treggerguard with your finger until the pressure is released on the catch and the trigger group can be opened.

You should get a manual. The Scott DUff book is best, but even an army field manual covers all the basics.

It sounds like the trigger guard got bent in trying to install the trigger housing group.

If the guard has the crosswise hole at the rear, a live round or a cleaning rod can be used to pull backward and disengage the guard then swing it down. If no hole, use a rod and pull it backward. (A brass or aluminum rod may be better, but don't worry overmuch about that rifle; they are not delicate.)

It sounds like either he tried to install the trigger housing group with the hammer uncocked or didn't get the lugs lined up and tried to force things.

I think there may be no other way but the use of some force. Once you get it out, examine it carefully, and observe how it is supposed to go in and lock.

It is pretty simple, but so are many other things that can get messed up.

Thanks, I've got it now. Yes, the trigger guard got closed again while it was out. I was trying to pull it down, which didn't work. I did try pulling it back but was afraid to use much force. I finally just pulled back a little harder and it seems to be fine now. I've installed it and taken it out again several times to check.

I do have the Duff "Owner's Guide" as well as the manual sent along by the CMP, so I've got plenty of information. I'm not very experienced at taking down firearms and I have only moderate mechanical skills, so I'm a little cautious about stripping things to the last part. I mainly like to strip them enough that I can understand how they work and clean and lube them thoroughly.

By the way, what a great gun! Accurate, powerful, not too long to be pretty handy.
