Gander mt here has a NEF brand riot type 12 gauge shotgun, for 169.00. If this is a good deal/gun? Any problems? I am a bit of a shotgun newbie. The intended use is just home defense/plinking. Oh, can I fire all types of shotshells in this? Slugs I assume- only non rifled type? Thanks in advance..

I would have a hard time paying that much when you can get Remington 870 Express for less than $100 more with the current promotions going on.

As far as "all types" off ammo, that's a pretty vague question. It should be able to fire most types of ammo of the proper length and gauge.

As far as slugs, you actually want rifled slugs assuming it is a smoothbore. Sabot slugs are only for rifled barrels.

Good American made pumpguns in used condition are pretty widely available at a similar price. Why not get the "real thing?"

The Maverick 88 is the the same price range new, or if you're willing to go out and look(and to buy used), one of your local gun/pawn shops may have a used 870 or 500 for about the same price.

A new Mossberg 500 combo, which comes with either the 24" rifled or 18.5" cylinder bore barrel, and an adjustable choke 28" barrel, sells for around $260-$270.

Used US made pumps of proven longevity and reliability are neither scarce nor expensive. I paid $178 out the door for my last 870.
