What company makes a cheap 1911? Around the $300-$500 range. A website would be appreciated. Thanks

I would say Rock Island Armory or maybe Norinco. You may also be able to find a NIB Springfield GI45, or a used Mil-Spec, maybe the Taurus PT1911.

spyderdude is correct. My vote goes for the Rock Island. Just do a search for Rock Island or Armscor and you should find what you are looking for.

For $400 to $500 you should be able to find a new Springfield GI or Mil-Spec.
I found a Mil-Spec with only 50 rounds through it for $366.

Rock Island .45's start a'round $359
Springfield Armory parkerized WW-II G.I.'s from $469.88
Springfield Armory parkerized MIL SPEC's from 'bout $579.88

Not to bash the others, but of the three mentioned i'd go with the NORINCO, if you can find one.

The Rock is the best buy of the bunch. The Rock is inexpensive to buy, but not cheap by any measure.

I like the Springfield Armory, I have 3 1911's and the 4"XD, GREAT handguns. Check out this web site for a large selection of all types of .45's at all levels of prices including A LOT with those you set. I have ordered several firarms from them through my dealer and have had GREAT service and no problems. HOPE THIS HELPS

As a Springfield GI owner, I say go for the Rock Island. If I knew where I was going to wind up with my 1911, that's where I'd have started.

Let me say that I have a Springfield "loaded", Norinco, Sig GSR, a couple of Kimbers, and a couple of Para Ordnance LDAs. I would say, for the best quality-to-price ratio, go with a Norinco or save up an extra $100 and go for an STI Spartan.

Norincos are famous for their extremely durable solid steel construction, they are made 100% to Colt 1911 Mil-spec and have great "out of the box" accuracy.

As for the STI, STI is famous for their $1500+ match grade guns. They want they manage to produce the Spartan at such a great price, which you can find for around $550, is that they use Rock Island frames to build on. So, for a couple hundred dollars more than a stock Rock Island, you can get one built into a match grade shooter quality 1911 by a very well respected company.

You can get a Rock Island Tactical model for under $400. It's a solid 1911 with a beavertail, commander hammer, good ambi safety, and Novak-style sights. Also, you can't beat the support offered by Advanced Tactical (the importer) with a stick. They'll go the extra mile to make sure you're happy.

You might want to check out High Standard. They have a mil-spec .45 that has an MSRP of $539 but you could probably find it on Gunbroker for less.

I can't imagine *wanting* to go with High standard... Get the RIA, be happy. Have 2, see my smile?

August 28, 2007, 05:48 AM
Since the RIA and the High Standard are the same gun with different rollmarks, I don't see why you'd choose the more expensive version over the less expensive one.

Is the whole gun MIM?

+1 Go for the Rock

I'd never heard that RIA made the HS. I don't think it's mentioned on the 1911 site, like the STI, old CD's, etc.

Anyway, the 1911 forum site has lots of good info on rock island 1911's. Most parts are forged, a few MIM parts for stuff that doesn't matter.

I have 2 of them, love 'em both, for the price, you can't go wrong.

rock island all the way i have a mil spec 1911 and plan on geting the tac soon

August 30, 2007, 01:57 AM
I've done hours of handling and scrutiny on different brands, comparable models.

If I could find a Taurus for the same price as the Rock Island, I'd probably buy it.

I've also checked out the "fit-and-finish" on the Springfield GI alongside the others.

For the money, I'll take the Rock Island.

August 30, 2007, 01:59 AM
For under $400, new 1911 go with Rock Island, used 1911 go with Norinco or early IAI.

August 30, 2007, 02:16 AM
or save up an extra $100 and go for an STI Spartan.
You might want to check out High Standard. They have a mil-spec .45 that has an MSRP of $539

both of these are made, by the same company in the P.I. that makes the RIA. granted the STI does have upgraded internals.

the high standard GI is literally a RIA GI with HS rollmarks and checkered grips.

the STI Spartan is a little different, the frame and slide are Philippine, with the slide given STI style cocking serrations and the appropriate sight cuts, the small parts are STI, the sights are LPAs, and it's all assembled in the P.I. to meet STI's specs.

at a price difference of $210. based on $390 for a RIA tactical Vs. $600 for the Spartan, you kinda have to ask yourself what the adjustable sights and a few more non-MIM parts inside, is worth to you.

August 30, 2007, 01:00 PM
If you really want a Colt, hold out, keep looking, I got a like new Government Model for $550.

August 30, 2007, 01:02 PM
+1 Rock Island Armory....I'd take it over a Taurus 1911 any day of the week

September 13, 2007, 01:13 PM

I know this post is getting old but I wanted to try to post a pic for
the first time . Probably still haven't got it figured out .

I have a Ria not the tactical if I was to do it over would get the tactical.
Eyes aren't as good as they used to be .
I got the Pt 1911 and the STI Spartan also .
Like all three don't think you could go wrong with any .

According the their website Rock offers:

Parkerized Frame with Parkerized Military Style Slide… $164.95

That's low enough to make a grown man cry! I like the idea of the hard chrome lined bores in their .45 ACP barrels. Just TRY to wear that out.

One of these days, I WILL get myself a RIA 1911A1...why? Just to have one.
