Colt 1911XSE and Factory Mags...

Quick question...have a Colt 1911XSE Government with the factory mags in it. If I put an empty mag into the gun and cycle the slide, the slide will not stay open, but if there is a round in the mag and I chamber it, the cycle the slide again, the slide remains open. How come it won't do that when I put in the empty mag only? Thanks

I'll bet the chambering round is dragging the follower slightly forward, enough to allow it to engage the slide stop.
Lock open the slide and insert the magazine while looking down into the ejection port. You can see where the follower should be hitting the slide stop.

As far as I can tell, Wilson 47D's should be considered "factory mags". ;)

Haven't tried Wilson's yet, but, I found the McCormick Power Mags work extremely well in my Colt 1991A1. Haven't had any problems with the factory Colt mags either.

I have been a big fan of Wilson's mags also for several years, but they are not without problems themselves. After a good bit of use the nylon follower gets worn out, and doesnt lock the slide back after the last cartridge is fired.
I have not had this problem with McCormick mags since they have no nylon follower.
As a result, I have gradually phased out Wilson mags. The Power Mag by McCormick is my favorite, at the moment.
