Serial number danger?

I'm getting ready to totally revamp/expand the Gun Gallery on my site. I notice some people here on THR (and other places) always blur out the serial numbers of their guns when they post pics.

Why is that?

What can a bad guy do wth that info exactly? Here in Indiana there is no actual "gun registration"....I do belive the dealer is required to destroy transaction details like that after so many days. So what is the danger of someone seeing your gun's serial?

Theoretically no ''danger'' but ... I blur mine and quite simply .... I have no wish to give out any info that I don't have to!!

Paranoia? maybe!:p

Some people may report the gun (with number) as stolen. Guess what that does to you...

MicroBalrog -- but doesn't one's receipt protect one from that? I know I keep all mine.

It is possible that you would still have to go thru some hassles until the fact that you are the actual owner is established.

You never know what either the Anti's or some other idiot might do, because they have an agenda.

I blur serial numbers as a matter of course.

Better safe than sorry.

Not really much to add besides what everyone else said. Just wanted to say to let us know when you get everything updated again. I know I enjoy looking through others collections, especially when the person also frequents Tech-Report ;)

Everyone else does it. I just do it to fit in!

I know I enjoy looking through others collections, especially when the person also frequents Tech-Report I guess WebHobbit's been around, huh? He also frequents Ars Technica (or used to, I guess...).

I was a big Ars guy a while back....had over 8,000 posts! After awhile the place just wasn't what it used to be and I had to leave.

I rarely posts there anymore.

I'm a Mod at TechReport...just in the Matrox section. Too bad it's mostly dead.

I also post a bit at several Comicbbook forums:

I get around!

I don't post photo's of my guns, so it's not a problem for me.

The fact that I don't have a digital camera has nothing to do with it.:D

Receipts....

Ah yes, receipts...

I've purchased quite a few firearms where the receipt is scribbled on a piece of notebook paper by the seller.

There's no record in the seller's bound book, because he doesn't have one -- it's a private sale from a collection or someone just wanting to get something else.

I prefer to treat my serial numbers as I do my Social Security Number -- as a secret.

While the potential for mischief is probably small, why take the chance?
