I was just using a pneumatic version to hang some antennas and it wasn't too loud. 50 PSI sent the fishing line way over the top of my trees. Are you using one of the flammable ones?

longer tubes and smaller chamber.

Yes it is a combustion one. Hairspray and such is what i use.

Make sure that the suppressor design is approved by ATF as a non-firearm before any construction takes place. The ATF has held that, and nabbed people for unregistered suppressors for airguns and paintball guns, since they were capable of bringing the report down one decibel for one shot. To date ATF has never determined any air gun silencer to be a non-firearm AFAIK.

Best way to ensure that the thing is a non-firearm silencer would be to have it permanently fitted to the barrel. I believe airgun silencers are now legal, provided that they are permanently attached.

I found porting the last foot or so of the barrel to help some (the barrel on ours was ~5 feet).

I also used diesel engine starter as propellant/fuel.

Get a tube and place onto the opposite end from your chamber. Make it same diameter as the chamber but have the barrel go through this muzzle device and port the hell out of the barrel. This will let the gasses expand into the external chamber while still keeping your velocity up. Same as the outer tube on an integral suppressed gun.

I ported the end of mine and used plastic baffles and fiberglass packed inbetween a 3" pipe over the end. (The guys at Acacia House could hear Brady and I shooting at them and could target their water balloons at us).:D

First up, try butane. Less gummy residue, more predictable. 1/4 to 1/2 second spurt will give the best performance. When you get bored of that and want more bang for your buck, go pneumatic and never look back.

I forgot about the packing. Baffles not really needed. About 1/2" holes, and lots of them. Guess I will have to get the ol' spud gun out and work on it this fall.

Id put up a picture but i dont have a camera. So just make the tube longer, or drill holes in to let out the gas? Is that what you mean by baffling the gun?

Make the tube a little longer. Use a chamber diameter piece, as long as your chamber and put a ruducer on each end. Drill holes into the barrel where this piece will slide over it. Slide on this piece leaving the top reducer off. Fill this part with fiberglass or stuffing and then put on the other reducer. Place this piece over the ported barrel cestion. If you assembled the chamber and barrel with a threaded coupling, then changing barrels will be easy. Still trying to get some kind of drawing on this end to make it easier to understand.

No. Baffling the gun involves asking it different questions about geometry, physics, IT, and grammar.

You need to fiddle with your tube length, chamber dimensions, and propellent so that there is essentially no pressure remaining in the barrel when the potato leaves the muzzle.

The pressure pushes the potato out, and once the block (potato) is out, so wouldn't the pressure equalize with the outside as soon as the potato was gone anyway?

Yes but that is what creates the boom anyway. When somethings shot out of a short barrel the gases are under high pressure, therefore the gases expand farther out faster, creating a faster and louder boom. If you have a longer barrel and larger demensions the release of gases will be at a lower pressure, meaning it will have a softer sound.

I'm an idiot, I put up the wrong potato gun suppressor link. Try this one. (http://www.advancedspuds.com/silencer.htm)

+1 on the pneumatic potato weapons. They are much more powerful and reliable. If you use an electronic valve they can even be set up on a trip wire for paintball games or pranks on friends.
