What I know about dating S&Ws you could fit in a thimble and rattle around.

What can anyone tell me about a J frame, square butt, 2"bbl, serial 668JXX, with a flat black finish that I'm told was the "Highway Patrol" finish?

According to my copy of SCSW this would about 1972.
