Saw in another post that you could carry openly but I've never seen it done.

The text on an Indiana carry permit states The Licensee is hereby licensed by the Indiana State Police Department to carry on their person or in a vehicle, any handgun lawfully possessed by Licensee. There is no stipulation on the permit that the gun must be concealed, though Indiana law might certainly state otherwise.

Hi, brian, yes, the Indiana LTCH (we do not have a CCW as commonly understood) statute simply says "carry". Outside the little pink card, there are no restrictions placed upon how one may carry.
I am not surprised you have never observed its practice. Those with a lot of experience in carrying realize that it is a very good idea to cover it up.
Moreover, I know of several county attorneys that advise their Sheriffs to tell applicants that they must conceal the pistol(s). As well, with reforms in other states carry laws, the concealment restriction was mandated. For some reason many here beleive that they must conceal their weapon pursuant to Indiana law as well. (Of course, someone told me it is illegal to put mustard on fish).

As long as you have a permit I don't know of any laws stating you must conceal.
However, a friend of mine with IPD advised me to conceal because some officers have been known to cite open carry as disturbing the peace.
NOT all but some. Depends on the individual.
My persoanal approach is carry as comdortable as you can. I conceal but if my shirt tail rides up and someone sees the end of my holster I'm not goi9ng to lose any sleep.
Of course some situations call for greater discretion.

I only open carry if I'm doing an A to B trip. For example, if I'm going from my place in Lafayette to the range or if I'm going from here to my in-laws where "Hayzeus left his zapatos". ;) If I'm going out in town I always conceal.

Jedi, Indiana has no statute as to "disturbing the peace" statute. Maybe a city ordinance which is of questionable legality? Never heard of it--sounds like mustard on fish.

I've had 2 LEO's tell me you MUST carry concealed. Most LE's do not seem to know the laws they are upholding when it comes to firearms.

I'm not planning on doing it often since I don't like people to know that I carry but sometimes when I'm in suit I wouldn't mind wearing my fobus paddle so I can take it on and off quickly without undoing my belt. And in the suit the jacket opens frequently and it can be seen.

Matt1911, when I was a LEO, one of my assigned gigs was to take the "nut mail" as we called it. Officers would call in with all kinds of misapprehensions.
During Indiana's deer season, they came in herds. "Where's the statute against carrying long guns in the car?" "Where's the law that makes it illegal to carry nunchuku." Swords too, always questions about swords. Huh, there isn't any. I thought we got our cops from Chicago or among the East Coast Eloi or something.
I told my boss, the CLEO of the county, that IPAC had best volunteer to lecture to our academy students. He did start giving out those criminal code manuals (printed by IPAC, I now get them from the IPDC) which really helped cut the questions.
Lots of cops just go on what they are told. However, once they got the code books, they read them and kept them in their scout cars. Talk about thristing for knowledge!
BTW, those code books are a fine idea to keep in your car in case you get a young pup po-po who has a misapprehension about Indiana's LTCH. When buddies come in from out-of-state I always send them a copy of Indiana's universal reciprocity statute just in case. Beats paying some tilecrawler an outrageous amount of money!:D

Do you have a link where I would be able to get on of those manuals. Or an address. I searched online and couldn't find any of this stuff.

brian, sure, www.in.gov/pdc/ (http://www.in.gov/pdc/). The code books are really handy. They have Titles 7 (booze code), and some Title 9 (our incessant traffic code) stuff in them as well.
I don't know if they will sell to you or not though. You can print Title 35, Chapter 47 (the LTCH law, et al) off the state's site if not.

Thanks for the link. I can't look at it right now because I haven't had the funds to register for the access indiana yet but I'll be able to look at it soon. Would you be willing to cut and paste an email with the firearm stuff and send it to my email at brian0128@hotmail.com? If it's too big don't worry about it but thanks for the link and chapter info.

Was a Libertarian 2nd amendmendment activist. He has run for some public offices. He switched to the Republican party due to incessant failure of the Libertarian. Not a quote just a brief on the info he has aquired through experience. He is an EX-ANTI-GUNNER. He has a whole slew of different ideas and viewpoints about freedom and BOR.

The Indiana License to carry does not stipulate how to carry, just that you can.
As we all know, if I am standing in line at the liquor store with a weapon visible and the BG walks intent on robbing the place it is likely he will shoot me before the guy next to me who has his weapon concealed.
I choose to give myself the advantage.

El Tejon, they were lying to you.
Of course there is no law about that. It is just common sense.:D

Maybe a city ordinance
Given that it came from Indianapolis, it's extremely likely it's an assinine city ordance. The number of those stupid things is getting ridiculous. Guess that's what we get for electing an almost-liberal mayor and just recently turning our city-county council over to the dems...which means liberal. Indy is the one place in central Indiana where democrat does equal liberal.
