Best 9mm defence round

Please excuse me if this question has been asked a million times before. I'm new and I'm trying to learn more about ammo.
I just went to Walmart and picked up some of the Winchester "white box" ammo to take to the range with me. Now I was wondering what ammo I should get to keep for home defence? I'm not looking to stock up on this ammo, just maybe a 20-50 rounds to have around the house to use to get the most stoping power, so price isn't really an issue. I'm going to the gun show Sunday so I'm sure I'll be able to find just about anything.
This will be for a Ruger P89T. Thanks

Is that magic enough?
Kidding... seriously, the best ammunition out there might not be the best for your gun. It might not be very accurate or it might not even cycle in your gun very well.
I'll let the other guys suggest rounds for you, take these suggestions and try them out... see what groups the best, what is the most reliable in your gun... and what you can shoot the best with. Then you use that ammo because for you and your gun - THAT is the best defensive ammunition.

Yep, George has it right. Even if you only plan to keep 20-50 rounds of it on hand you ought to know how it shoots.
In my experience (and in myFEG hi-power) I've found that Winchester "white box" 115gr target ammo has the same point of impact as 115gr Winchester silvertips. The silvertips are moving a little faster but at 10 yards there is no difference in point of impact. The silvertips are also a bit cheaper than other HP's on the market, and have a nice sloping shape that feeds easily. This was the FBI's carry load in 9mm for years.
Your results may vary.

There are a lot of good ammos out there but you should try a few and make sure it feeds well in your weapon and is reliable. Some guns are picky...

I'm partial to Speer Gold Dot 124gr +p in 9mm. That doesn't mean it's the best, but it is good. Try some.

For my G19 I use Speer 124gr+p Gold Dots, as this round performs very well out of it.

My favorite is Winchester Ranger 147 grain. Easy follow up shots, very accurate in my SIG P226, and used by two of the largest police forces in the U.S., the LAPD and LASD. I haven't heard any complaints about this round and its considered highly by Mr. DiFabbio at Ammolab.com for a non+P round. I believe the Winchester Ranger 127 +P+ is better but I can shoot the 147 with better speed and accuracy. Problem is its a LEO round so its not as easy to find as I'd like.
But if I didn't have access to the Rangers I'd be happy with 124, 124 +P, or 147 loads by Remington Golden Saber and CCI Gold Dot. I'd have no problems relying on them.
I've shot the .357 SIG many times and I love shooting it too. :banghead:

I carry Winchester Ranger +p+ 127 gr. SXT., but have recently been thinking of trying the Gold Dots out.

If you choose to try the Speer Gold Dot 124gr +p (or non +P) in 9mm, there are still LEO return boxes available from many dealers, labeled as "Practice Ammo". You could get 250 rnds for only $45, then if it works for you & your pistol, go and buy the 20 rnd "Fresh" boxes for defense.

jims98z28, first welcome to THR !
As stated by others, have a gun, ammo must be reliable EVERY time in that gun, affording accurate quick hits. Guns are like women--each different and excercise "perogative".
I guess Dr. Rob and I are the only proponents of the Win 115 gr STHP. I have been using STHP for years, because -for a long time - not a lot of choices, per se'. THE BIGGEST reason I've stayed with them is they tend to feed in most anything. I assisted with CCW for awhile, this proved true in a variety of guns.
I too have found the similarities that Dr Rob has with the white box and STHP. I also noticed the White Box 115 JHP are real similar-I mean real similar to the STHP in design and both published and chrono'd results.

Yes there are a lot of good choices , Corbon, Pro-Load, RCBD...etc. I also suggest our own WESHOOT2@aol.com ( he makes good stuff) ;)
Before I carry a load I run a minimun of 500 rds. STHP a bit more affordable to do this. I understand penetration/expansion...etc. I shoot dirt/mud and critters ( also test car parts , bldg parts) . Main thing is shot placement, bullet got to go where you pointin'. Makes no nevermind if one has the the most ubersuperduper load-if it won't feed, won't shoot POA/POI, and one can't afford to test it for reliability. IMO

Reliablity is #1 when it comes to ammo choices. Some weapons function great with <this> ammo, but they'll choke on <that>. My personal experience, the Winchester White Box stuff has been extremely reliable in the pistols I shoot it out of (a Glock 19 and a Sig P239 in .40) Although for a defensive load, I prefer Federal Hydrashoks, 124 gr 9mm and 165 gr .40, based on previous, very positive results from Federal ammunition before. Very reliable, goes to point of aim every time, low muzzleflash, the price isn't too stiff either.
YMMV, of course.
