I have heard of the 357 Maximum on THR a few times and I have never seen the cartridge before. I am asking for a side by side photo of a 357 MAX cartridge and a 357 Mag cartridge. If some one would oblige, I would greatly apprecite it.

I don't have one but you should be able to find a pic with a search of the internet. I can tell you this - it's taller.

Ruger used to make blackhawks chambered in that. Other than that, I've heard of NEF rifles made for it.

Dan Wesson, too.

However, I'm pretty sure that the most common platform has been in T/C Contenders, and I'm sure one or more of the small-output single shot makers that the IHMSA crowd favor have made 'em as well.

Here is a ruger 357max. It is a lot of fun to shoot and I tend to plink with it a bunch. I am not pushing the max's limit yet because I am burning up 158' JSP and JHP's. I don't want to really stress my Ruger until I can get 180's and 200 grn bullets.

Unlike the DW's and TC's, the Ruger does not take kindly to light bullets, ball powders and high speeds. It can frame cut the gun but the word is it goes so far and then stops.

I don't want to do that to my specimen. I want to shoot it for what was made for. Long range target shooting and silhouette.

Savage also made a number of their Model 24 (I think that's the model - the o/c shotgun/rifle) iwith a .357 max chambering too.

I have 3 boxes of Remington 180gr 357 max (60 rounds) if anyone is interested in buying them. They were given to me by a friend who thought they were the same as 357 magnum. PM me if you're interested. I know its the wrong forum, but I figured since I was here...:)

I've got to ask...anyone know the velocity difference between this and say .30 carbine out of the same size revolver?

Thanks.

Bill,

I am not sure, I have shot both and I like the Max more then the 30 carbine but I am on the hunt for an old style carbine Ruger also. I would guess they are both pretty close. The Max will easily do 1650+ with 158's but I don't push mine that hard. I stay right around 1550 to 1600. I will probably push 180's a lot harder then I push the 158's since I wont have to worry as much about the top strap cutting from my reading.

this seems like the place to be for my question. i have a winchester 94 project rifle. i have a barrel thats is chambered for the round already. will the 94 action be able to handle the 357 max at a reasonable load? i know there are 357 mag 94's out there. im just not sure of the pressure level differences between 357 mag, 30-30 or 38-55. if i am to get serious with this, would it be wise to locate a big bore receiver or ?
thanks

Do some searches here: http://leverguns.sixgunner.com/ for folks who have converted their Winny '94s to .357 max. Lots of opinions there, both good and bad.
