I got in a box of Hornady TAP red hulls in to try out and went out to the range today. I guess my barrel didn't like them and, It seems the Federal Vital Shock's with the flight control wad won out. Here are the pics.

two at 25 yards.

Here are the pics of the Federals for comparison.

two at 25 yards.

The reason the TAP's were shooting high at 25 yards was that my rear sight was loose and was walking up in elevation. I placed an order today for 100 rounds of the Federals to use for my up comming shotgun class at the end of this month with Louis Awerbuck.

I bought a sleeve of the Federals. I really like them, and so does the shotty. I have a Rem. 870 ex. HD.

Different guns pattern different ways. if your gun likes Federal, then that's what you should run. recoil is very manageable. I am still looking at an Enidine recoil buffer for the Mesa Tac grip I installed. I figure that with that, there will be little if any felt recoil at all. Not that it's bad now. I normally run out of ammo before I get tired of shooting it. And Federals ain't cheap if you gotta order them. the S&Bs with the enidine are supposed to be pretty sweet. Not too shabby for use either.

I would love to take a course with Louis Awerbuck. Way too rich for my blood right now. Maybe someday.

Best get that sight locked down before you get to class with Louis- first thing he did when we got on the line was to check every student's sights to make sure they were secure, and if anything is loose he'll push it right off the gun. That happened to one of my classmates...

He charges the going rate for top-flight instructors (which is cheap compared to a lot of schools you have to travel to) and is worth twice what you pay. I've taken 6 or so of his classes, including his shotgun course. I've never regretted a penny of it.

If the choice were between buying another firearm for the collection or taking a class from Louis, the latter would win out every time.

The price for the class is very reasonable. I've been holding out for a shotgun course at www.tacproshootingcenter.com where I've taken all of their pistol courses but, I keep missing out on them due to scheduling issues. It tightened down the elevation screw this morning. I'll keep an eye on it but right now, it's rock solid. I don't think I'll have any problems.

Great post Flip.

I've had similar results with my 870 and these loads. The Federal stuff patterns just a little bit tighter than the Hornady TAP.

It's not only the tighter pattern but also a denser shot cloud. The Hornady has eight pellets and the Federal has nine pellets.

Still no matter. I have to get off my butt and go back to work. Been not working almost 2 years. Why I am a little short of money right now. But my own fault. Heck, I might be able to milk this until the first of the year. We'll have to wait and see.

But shotty courses and other stuff are out right now. Working on Vista certification ( yeah, right. Haven't cracked that book in a week ) and hope to get employment someday soon.

Hey flip180, it's the blue ones (low recoil) that shoot really tight. Anyway, your Fed's are great...I found my old pattern tgts the other day and my 10yd pattern with TAP low recoil out of 18" were the same as yours, not tighter. I thought they were a little tighter for some reason.

I'd love to take an Awerbuck course someday too...
