This monster of a machine gun should be brought back no matter how old it is, It is light in weight around 6ish kilos, Smaller than most GPMGs and has an ROF around 1,500RPM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
If it was to be brought back, It should be rebarreled to either 7.62/5.56 NATO.

MG 81 was a machine gun developed by Mauser for Germany in WWII. It had a very high rate of fire of over 1500 rds per minute. Later the version at fire rates over 3000 RPMs.This was before the MG42. It was mostly used by the Luftwaffe in their aircraft.

So if it were brought back into use and remade to use 7.62x51....
1.378 lbs of weight fired off (case, bullet, powder, total weight of cartridge) every second. How many one second bursts can you carry along with all your other gear?

Maybe air-cooling would work alright when the guns are moving along at 350-400 mph in an airplane. I would think that you'd have a little trouble keeping it cool while sitting still, esp. with a cyclic rate of 1500rpm.

You won't be able to "sit still" firing 7.62x51 at 1500 RPM.
350-400 mph
Hold the trigger down. You'll get there. :D

1200 RPM from a MG-42 is plenty, and a nice quick change barrel. If you want it light, get the Ameli MG-80 223 variant.

go w/ a early 42 bolt (pre anti bounce assembly) and you should hit 1500 in the 42
(it will eventually go Kaboom though)
and just swap the feed cover, feed tray, and a 11mm booster nozzle from a MG2 of MG3 and your all set in 7.62nato
or just lighten the bolt of a MG3
