OK well a buddy of mine has an oder savage that we have determined is relatively accurate with bout 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards. What we're wondering is can we load it to make it a decent coyote gun out to about 450 yards.?

if any one is knowledgeable about it id like to know from some of the hand load guru's on here about energy at said range or what is the max we can carry such a small bullet with ethical killing ability and possable bullet powder combo's that have worked for you

For coyotes at 400+ yds you are better off with a 22-250 or 220 Swift, better yet a 6mm of some flavor would be better still. The 222 is about 100 fps behind the 223 at best. It will do well at 250-300 or so yds but loses too much velocity after that to both shoot flat and buck the wind or still have enough OOPH to be 100% effective on game of this size IMO.

I have to agree with Ol' Joe, the 22-250 is a much better round for 400+ yards out.

The normal factory loaded 222 Remington 50 gr bullet will drop between 50 and 70 inches 500 yards out and will have a velocity of ~ 1,000 fps..

The normal factory loaded 223 Remington 50 gr bullet will drop between 46 inches 500 yards out. The 55 gr bullet will drop 55 to 60 inches at 500 yards wit a velocity of ~ 1,300 fps.

The 22-250 Remington 50 gr bullet will drop just under 30 inches and have a velocity of over 1,800 fps. As you can see it's a very flat round compared to the above 2. At 400 yards the drop is less than 13 inches @ 2,500 fps.

It does not have a lot of punch that far out. I have a .222 Mag heavy barreled Sako that will though. :D
It replaced a very accurate .222 for that very reason. The .222 is great for shorter distances without the recoil etc. of the better long distance rounds, especially when you get bigger than a .223.

A .223, a .222 Mag or bigger is more up to the task and minimal at that.

The above two posts say it all. I had a Savage Mod 340 in 222 during the early 70's. It shot the Sierra blitz bullet very well. It accounted for many chucks out to about 175 yards. If they were out past that we went to my hunting buddy's 22-250 Mod 700 Rem. HB.
