Anyone load the .500 s&w mag? A friend of mine has one and at 50.00 a box I told him I would look in to Reloading for him. He has a new england single shot handi rifle. And he would benifit from shooting more if it cost less to shoot any input appreciated

I have a 4" .500 S&W revolver, an 8-3/8" .500 S&W revolver, as well as a Handi-Rifle in .500 S&W. I shot reloads in all three today. What is your friend looking for? Plinking loads? Hunting? Full power?

Hunting rounds he lives in Mississippi and as I understand they let you shoot a single shot rifle during muzzleloader season so he bought the .500 as an all season gun

There's an excellent article on the .500s&w available at:
http://www.john-ross.net/pdfs/maghist.pdf

Not just reloading, though he does talk about reloads quite a bit. John Ross is a huge fan of the .500 smith... and an all around good guy.

That's one of those cartridges that if you aren't reloading for it, you should be. If you shoot much with exotic calibers, it doesn't take long to pay for a nice reloading setup.

Mine has never seen anything but reloads. My best load uses H110/Win. 296 & Sierra 400 grain Sports Master bullets. My 15 inch Encore gets 1.5 inch or less 3 shot groups at 100 yards with this load.

I agree with Grumulkin, H110 (same as Win 296) or Lil' Gun are great powders for this round, and burn slow enough to work well in a rifle. You can get plenty of good load data here:

I've had good luck with 16.5 grains of titegroup under a 335 grain bullet for a plinking load. I use H110 for the one's when I want to show off and I'm working on a project now where I'm going to load homemade 440 Grain GC bullets over some trailboss.

FWIW.

Have a good one,
Dave
