I've been looking around the net for awhile and have been mainly finding soft points from a company called Golden Bear. While I'm guessing not many go out with the 7.62x54r to hunt I'm hoping there are at least one or two here on THR who can give me some feedback on this ammo or generally any ammo they're used to using. Thinking on picking up a box of these and trying them out, see how my rifle likes them. If not maybe I'll just bite the bullet and get the reloading components for it.

Thanks in advance everyone.

I can vouch for the Winchester "Metric" white box loading by IMI of Israel for the 7.62x54R from my M44. IIRC, it is a 180gr lead core/copper jacket soft point.

I have taken two feral hogs, one whitetail doe, and one large aggressive feral dog (chow mix) with that specific round. All had through-and-through penetration with a very large for caliber exit wound in the area of ~1.75". It looked like an exit wound from my friend's .270WSM who uses bonded bullets exclusively. All of the recipients of that load fell in their tracks without a move except for the aggressive dog. I suspect adrenaline and nerves had a hand in prolonging his expiration.

I curious about the Barnaul 203gr SP load and will try it out in the field in a couple of months.

I use the 203 grainers. I'm starting to think they might be overkill on the white tail around here. It makes hits at 150 yards with open sights so it seems decent. Have yet to do an expansion test on it but it seems to be nasty stuff just on size alone.
