Well lets hear it about this. The Onion can sometimes be funny, sometimes not. Too bad I feel that there needs to be a little of this in school.
(You do all know that they are not serious, don't you)

All jokes aside though, I do think that there should be a mandatory weapons safety and familiarization course taught at all high schools. Nothing too major, but more like a class teaching the 4 rules, basic marksmanship principles, and hunting/firearms safety, as well as some basic legal procedures and terminology.
Something like a class where students are first taught the 4 rules, and about gun safety, then taught about the legalities of gun ownership, then taught about safe handling and operation of some basic firearms, and towards the end of the class, allowed to shoot a good 50 rounds or so through a firearm for familiarization purposes. This should help reduce gun accidents and help encourage responsible ownership and use of firearms, as well dispel many common firearms myths.
My girlfriend Kimberly went through something similar with the Police Explorers program a few years ago when she was in school, and it worked out great for her. She was pretty knowledgeable and safe when I took her to the range for the first time, so I think it's a good idea to teach teens about stuff like that.
