As you probably know already, we cannot legally bow hunt in U.K. However, this is certainly not the case in South Africa. Here is a picture I have just received from my friends at Kei River Hunting Safaris. It shows Professional Hunter Dave and his client with a lion, taken with the bow. The ultimate bow hunt?

That is a fine trophy. I think it is a toss up on ultimate bow hunt as their are a few things right up their. Lion, Polar bear, Grizzly, pretty much anything that turn around and eat your butt if you screw up.

I still have a picture of a guy that shot a Kodiak bear at 18 yards with a longbow.....

He was on his hands and knees crawling in alder thickets through tunnel that went to the stream where the bears were feeding on salmon. The bear was walking along the stream and he shot as it passed. Had to hold the bow flat as there wasn't enough headroom to hold it upright.

I've heard the cape buffalo is the most dangerous animal in Africa. On top of that the buffs ribs are supposed to be overlapped making a vitals shot extremely difficult. I know people hunt them with bow, and apparently the buff will hunt you at the same time.

I believe you are right on all counts Salthouse. Several people have been killed by buffalo this year already. They can turn the hunter into the hunted!!

Sure, the Buff is widely known as allegedly one of the most dangerous game in Africa. But, you can climb a nearby tree to get away from one.
If Leo turns on you, you're a few hours away from being Lion poo.

It's my opinion, as a lifelong bowhunter and a fan of all things African fauna and flora, that the Lion is probably the ultimate predator on the Veldt, in the stickers , and in the high grass.

If you want to hunt the most highly developed prey, then the Buff is it. It's evolved, or was created to (whichever you prefer), be resilient against the attack of lions. And, despite all that progress of ribs, simple CNS, really thick skin, etc, they still manage to take them down anyway on a regular basis.

But, if you want to hunt a Hunter that is one of the most highly developed predators on the planet, then the Lion is it. I can't think of another predator that is better able to move stealthily through its environment, hide as well, and stalk as perfectly. And, when it doesn't want to do that, it has the tools to just go out and run something down and eat it.
Nothing can stand against a pride of lions on their turf.

Of course, I haven't been hunting lions since I'm aware of their issues of population and endangerment, but if the populations ever get back to what they used to be before the days of the "Great White Hunter", I may just.

Back in the mid eighties whilst I was still able to shoot bow hunters competition I had planned a hunt for kodiak bear. While I'm sure that being in bow range of a lion is a heart thumper, a kodiak standing up in the "I'm pissed, here I come mode" has gotta be a near heart stopper. Especially given the different environments/habitats.

Polar bear also rates pretty high on the "you gotta be nutz" scale. :)

I only hope that I ever get to Africa. I would love to be able to go in about 10 years.

As I understand it AR-15, there are certain politicians in RSA who are campaigning to ban bow hunting. However, at the moment it is legal and has a very large number of followers.

Last weekend, my outfitter Principal and I had a booth at the Midland Game Fair, held at Weston Park, U.K. We arranged for one English guy to come and hunt with a trafditional English longbow he has made himself. He goes out in November. I'll get some pictures on his return.
