Howdy, y'all. Just started shooting black powder last year. I began with a Traditions flintlock longrifle, which I really enjoy. I just ordered an 1851 Navy .36 and I want to clarify something. Do lubed wads between the powder and ball serve the same purpose as Crisco or other lube stuck in the end of the chamber covering the ball? I understood the latter practice was to prevent chain fires. Thanks in advance.

Seth

As I understand it, yes. A properly sized and seated ball mostly prevents the chain fires though as I have read. I wouldn't fire mine without lube on the end or without Wonder Wads though.
The Wads help keep fouling down too.

I use the wads and no grease in the front end of the chamber. And the fear I have most with chain fires is from the nipple end. Be sure the caps are tight to the nipples. Sometimes all you need to insure this is to give the opening end of the cap a litle squeeze before you put it in place.
