I'll play along.

I don't have a picture of it without the scope, but here it is. I'm thinking about getting another scope for it soon, though. Either that or another 7.62x54R ammo buy.

DSArms STG58 build. 18" barrel with short steyr flash hider. Extreme duty scope mount and 30 round magazine.

And this is one of my favorite pictures of the FAL in action.

Its a janjaweed militia thing.

it works okay...I tried to see how much I could cram into it once...it took 3 1/2 mags to cause ejection issues. As I don't have a whole lot of boxer 308 that I shoot up, I hardly use it unless I am at a range where someone is getting upset at me tossing hot brass at them.

Extra points for concrete.

This rifle started life as an Austrian STG58. I got the parts kit from DSA and assembled it on a Dan Coonan receiver. The barrel was trimmed to 18". It has DSA "X-stock" furniture, a DSA hooded rear sight (not shown in pic), FSE trigger, and an FSE folding charging handle. The scope mount is an Armalite AR15 mount and the scope is a 2x-9x Weaver Classic.

This rifle started life as a Brazilian Imbel. Unike the STG58, this one was used hard with hardly any finish and beat up furniture. It was also built on a Dan Coonan receiver, with the barrel cut to 17" and a 1" long brake permanently attached (to make it AWB legal). After the AWB ended, it got a DSA Hampton lower, with the folding stock. It also has a FSE folding charging handle. The Bushnell 1x-6x scope get's used on my AK now. I just prefer the open sights on this rifle.

More pics here (http://mysite.verizon.net/dmk0210/fal/).

I'll play. This is my newest.

What size gas port you running on that one?

September 15, 2007, 12:26 PM
I really have no clue. It's a DSA I bought at a gun show. It's set on 2, and runs well, so I haven't looked to closely. It's very loud, however.

September 16, 2007, 11:33 AM
...since I have one now. I don't have great pictures yet because I just bought it. To quote myself, "It has a Karl Kahles scope - HELIA S. The power is "2,2 - 9 X 42".
Finish is 100%. I know with absolute certainty it has less than 500 rounds through it. I am 90% sure it had less than 100 through it."

It is an original Belgian FAL and I am lucky to have had the opportunity to buy it, especially for what I paid. Although it is a little disconcerting that its place may be better in the safe than on the range. I can't wait to take it out for a run though. Sorry W.E.G, she ain't gonna see any concrete ;)

How can you possibly get a good cheek weld as high as that scope is?

September 16, 2007, 08:49 PM
I used to be a member, had to sell her a year or so ago due to rising costs of ammo. Just too many calibers to feed.

September 16, 2007, 10:09 PM

How can you possibly get a good cheek weld as high as that scope is?

You can't.

Its a very "old-school" design, and much more valuable as a collector item than as a practical accessory.

Probably still shoots much smaller than minute-of-man groups at battle distances.
Which is what the designers had in mind.

September 16, 2007, 10:22 PM
How can you possibly get a good cheek weld as high as that scope is?

Good question. I can't. It actually sucks. I believe the idea was to still be able to use the iron sites. But you can't use the iron sites anyway. I've got the original "receiver cover" (if that is what it is called). So I can take the scope off and put it back to normal. I don't know exactly what I want to do with it yet. We'll see. Any suggestions?

That is the way I bought it. My uncle, who originally owned it, set it up that way. I don't know if he was talked into it or it was his idea. He passed away a couple years ago, so I have no idea. He was a smart guy, but he didn't know that much about guns or shooting. But he always bought nice stuff! (Just didn't set it up right ) :)

Heres my project. Waiting for a MagpulPRS-stock, except for that its about finnished.

Custom brake
Lothar Walther Stainless barrel, heavy.
TRG Bipod
Custom gas block, no cuts in the barrel, clamps on, with picatinney for iron-sights
Custom steel free float fore end
DSArms scope mount
Schmidt und bender PMII scope
Magpul stock, still waiting for that thing to get here!:banghead:

Need suggestions for a good pistol grip, its a L1A1 reciver.
Everything done at this rifle is reversible, if I should want to get it back to original condition.
The intention for this rifle is to be able hit a 40X40 centimeter target at 600 meters
(Its approx 17"by17") three times in 3 seconds....

Nice looking FALs guys. I'm hoping to put together an Izzy-flavored LB to go with my STG58C. And a Para, and a L1A1, and a..... Who would have thought W.E.G. would start a thread on FALs? On a more serious note, what have your collective experiences been like with the thirty-round magazines?

Deer Hunter
September 17, 2007, 10:22 AM

My 30 rounders are perfectly reliable. I bought two from DSArms and I'm pleased with them. Sure, you can't shoot from a bench with them, but so what? They are horribly fun to blast with. I've gone through each mag as fast as I can with no problems. So as far as reliability is concerned, mine have done just fine.

September 17, 2007, 11:47 AM

So was it a factory design or aftermarket procedure? I had assumed that my uncle or the shop where he bought it set it up that way.

Man. You guys have some sweet looking FALs. Makes me want to change things a bit on mine. However, I do believe that is sacreligious. To even speak of it may be blasphemy.

I have a metric one from DSA and have had zero issues with it so far. I was a little skeptical when I first got it, since it looks like it was welded by a drunk chimp, but on the range it runs just fine.

This might be a bone-headed question, but do they make FAL's in 30-06?

Deer Hunter
October 2, 2007, 11:47 PM
Nope. FALs were made in various old rounds, such as 7.92x33mm and 7x45mm, as well as .223 and .308 originally. DSA produced .260 remington and .243 versions, though. I saw once on FAL files that a .35 caliber round based off of the .308 was made for it.

However, I'm still waiting on the .45 caliber version based off of the .308 case.

October 2, 2007, 11:57 PM
Don't think they ever did, though there may have been some prototypes along the way back early on. The Belgians seemed much more interested in intermediate rounds, making versions in both 7.92 Kurtz and .280 British before NATO standardization forced 7.62x51.

October 3, 2007, 12:18 AM
The .35 caliber round bases on the .308 is the .358 Winchester. I don't know if that is what you're talking about.

October 3, 2007, 02:16 AM
Does anyone know what marks Century puts on their FAL's when they assemble? I assume there will be receiver marking, is there anything else?

I'm curious b/c I'd like to know how to tell the diff between a CAI build and a build done with just a CAI imported receiver.
