Which Gun

I'm sure this question gets asked a lot, but here it is any way. I have been looking for a bolt action rifle that I could hunt with and shoot at the range, and there is an ad in the paper for 3. My questions are, what is the better deal, and which caliber should I get?

Tikka T3 Lite Blued Syntehtic: With a leupold 3-9 variable scope boresited it is 650.

Remington 715: It comes with a 4 power bushnell scope and is 300, I have never heard of this rifle, what is different about it from a 700? Why is it so cheap?

Weatherby Vangaurd Synthetic: 500 or 600 if I get the stainless steel model.

I can get these in either a .270 or a .30-06. Which is the best deal, and if none of these are worth it, what else should I look for? I am not looking to spend a ton of money as I am going to be buying a M1 Garand in addition to this. This is not going to be the last rifle I buy, but I do not want it to feel really cheap. My grandfather has a colt sauer, and I'm not expecting any of these to be as smooth as that, but will they feel really cheap? I'm hoping in 5-10 years my grandpa will let me buy his colt off him, and I will then have a nice rifle, but until then I'd like to keep the cost relatively low.

What caliber is the Tikka? Which model Leupold? That looks like it would be my pick based on the research I've been doing- but I'm almost as new as you!

The Tikka is considered a very good gun, that's probably the low end Leupold scope on it, but not bad all in for the price. Couldn't find a local add for the Lite but the Tikka T3 Hunter sells for $588 with no scope.

Never heard of a 715 Remmy, there is a 7615 it's the pump action .223. The only Remington I know of that was about that price was a real POS, stay well away from it. I think they have dropped it now it was doing so much to destroy Remingtons reputation, very rough actions and not much in the way of accuracy. If it's not one of the 700 models don't touch it.

I've got a Vanguard, it's good action made by Howa. You might consider the same gun as a Howa 1500 for $100-150 cheaper. Local blued Vanguard price is $459 with no scope and $569 with a factory mounted 3-9.

Either caliber would make a good medium game round, I favor 30's personally but I do have a .270 also. You should be happy with either the Tikka or the Vanguard, but from the pricing I'd guess the Tikka is a little better buy.

none of those are really screaming deals. i would pass on the lot of them.

for chambering, same-same, really. given that you want a garand, i guess 30-06 would get the edge if you were after ammo commonality, or 270 would get the edge if you didn't want 2 guns shooting the same stuff. personally, i'd favor the 270, but in practice, either is fine.

for other options... wal-mart 700 adl is a great value (but the adl's were discontinued awhile back, so they are getting scarce - but the last wal-mart i was in still had some). ruger 77's are also a great value.

don't turn your nose up at the used a rack. great deals to be had on remington 721's, tang-safety ruger 77's, remington 700's, and the like.

Thanks for the response. It doesnt say what kind of scope, just 3-9 variable. I have no problem with a used gun, was looking at a sako at the gun show, just wanted too much with the pos scope they had on it. I'd actually rather get a used gun just because I could afford a nicer one. As far as wal mart, here in CA they no longer carry guns... At least all the ones I have been too. I even tried the one in Orville, which is a big farming town, nothing. I was very dissapointed. I will see what used ones they have. What would a good price on a 700 be? Not the average price, but a good one.

Edit: Also, what would be some used guns to look for? I can look up the general prices of them, but the only guns I know are the remington 700 series. Anything else to look for?
