And now the HARD CORE BALLOON CHALLENGE!
Soon we’ll be moving into the fall festival season with parties and gatherings and parades and all manner of celebration. And what goes great with celebrations? That’s right, BALLOONS!!! This challenge is a “hard core” extension of the previous one (you CAN do it). We’re moving from accuracy (can you hit the target) to precision (can you choose –where- to hit the target).
For this challenge we have a NEW TARGET.
http://www.targetz.com/targetz-lib/20033.pdf (WARNING, PDF FILE)
1) Download, print, and Post the target at 30ft (10 yards).
2) Load 10 rounds (one for each balloon)
2) Using any pistol and any method (unsupported, two hand, weak hand, whatever) try to shoot each balloon only ONCE.
As always, when you post don't forget to give us some details on your shooting (gun used, stance used, etc).
Super EXTRA BONUS POINTS:
I’ll give 5,000 super extra bonus points for each “cut string” (shooting the string rather than just shooting the balloons!)
This challenge may be shot at any speed you choose.
There it is. Have fun!

What...nothing? Is it too tough? Too boring???? C'mon guys n' gals how 'bout some feedback!
Fine, I'll lead off tonight after work :neener:
September 17, 2007, 02:48 PM
I hit all strings on all balloons. No pics though. Sorry forgot the camera. :D
September 17, 2007, 02:52 PM
I have the targets printed out already, just waiting on some time to get to the range.
September 17, 2007, 03:01 PM
I hit all strings on all balloons. No pics though. Sorry forgot the camera. Darned if that doesn't happen to me all the time too!

Okay, shot the challenge with a Taurus PT-1911 (5" barrel) and this is my best of three attempts. Indoor range and Winchester white box FMJ ammo. Although I like the PT-1911 and it's fun to shoot, it is (obviously) not the gun I'm best with. I can't wait to try it again with my SIG 229 or the CZ75b.
Going to the range on Friday if it doesn't rain ... will post my targets after that!
September 19, 2007, 07:18 PM
The string shot doesn't count because I was aiming at the yellow balloon
HAH, the string shots ALWAYS count! (My game my rules :D)
what's holding ya up?

[posting so i remember to come back to this thread later]
September 20, 2007, 10:08 PM
Okay, the first attempt (posted above) was with a new PT-1911. Gun was new to me, I don't generally shoot .45ACP, and have very little experience with a 1911 style gun anyway.
Well it was kinda bugging me so I went back and tried again with my old warhorse, a Ruger Security-Six .357 Magnum with a 6" barrel. Basically I consistently shoot this pistol better than anything else I own.
Two handed, freestanding, VERY slow fire, single action. Seriously I think it took me about four minutes to shoot this target!
September 21, 2007, 09:22 AM
Two balloons got away! I am going to try your challenge tonight!
September 22, 2007, 09:59 AM
AndyC, what's holding ya up?
No handgun yet, only my FAL - but I got my permanent residence granted yesterday, so I may not be pistol-less much longer :D

Shoot. Wish I had a printer that works. Was at the range today too.
So ah, can I use my Kadet 22 with red dot? I could probably fit all 10 shots in one balloon.
September 23, 2007, 11:53 PM
Join us when you can, the challenges aren't going anywhere!
Do I need to MAIL you some targets???? :neener:
Also, hey if you want to use the .22 and a red dot go ahead. I think we're generally finding that this is a pretty challenging challenge (no pun intended).
I have a couple of more pistol challenges in the works, then I'm going to cook up some long gun related ones (now that I have a 100 yard range to work with).
September 24, 2007, 09:20 AM
How about some Mosin Nagant challenges? It would have to be classed, so the guys with Finn rifles don't clean house on me.
September 24, 2007, 09:42 AM
I like the way you are thinking!
I might steal Ze's ideas and go from there with the Mosin challenge. :D
September 24, 2007, 11:13 AM
Mosin Challenge... setting the paper on fire? <grin>.
September 25, 2007, 08:55 PM
I had to take a "Shot" at this challenge.
Seeing as how 10 bullets were allowed, and with the price of ammo being what it is, I thought to myself. 10 bullets? WOW that's gettin' expensive!
So, I improvised and tried to see how many I could take out with one shot at 25 yards.
As it turns out, ALL of 'em.
Birdshot is a wonderful thing.:neener:

Knocking someone else's target off of the holder.:neener:
September 27, 2007, 02:28 AM
Ok, got a chance to post my targets.
On the left one, I used a standard isosceles stance.
On the right one, I used a sort of modified isoceles, where you bring your elbows in until they touch your ribcage. Akward, goofy looking, but pretty stable. Wouldn't recommend it with a hard recoiling cartridge though, or you'll get rear sight in your forehead :).
VERY nice! And we have at least one string cutter there!

dam and i went to the range yesterday for the first time in over a year. oh well ill have to get some printed out and go back tomarrow. oh shucks.
September 29, 2007, 05:09 PM
Here is the balloon target shot with a Polish 4.5mm Predom Lucznik pellet pistol. Since 30 feet is nearing the edge of it's max. accurate range, and the target it should be capable of hitting at that diference s greater in size than the balloons, I shot it from 7 yards (between 21 and 22 feet).
*ETA - all shots were fired two handed/standing/unsupported, WWB value pack FMJ ammo.
Did a little better than I anticipated with the snubbie; very new to shooting revolvers, and still getting the hang of it. All targets were from the beginning of my range session; I intended to run additional targets at the end of my session, but forgot... :o

This was quite fun, and hard, as I thought it would be.
All 3 targets are 10 yards, 2 handed, offhand.
Browning Buckmark Camper (5.5" bbl) - CCI Mini Mag HP (i realized later that the red dot sight was off to the right)
SW1911 stainless 5" bbl (rental) - American Eagle 230 gr
Glock 19 - Blazer Al 115gr.
I shot these back to back, and the differences in the triggers was very noticable. :uhoh: (I've got to get myself a 1911, eventually...)
November 3, 2007, 12:29 AM
Do you mind if I try one of these targets at 100yards with my .22 rifle? Could I post the target or do you strictly want to keep this to handguns?
November 3, 2007, 09:11 AM
Sure, try it with a rifle. I was actually planning on doing a few "rifle challenges" soon I just know that more people have handgun ranges than rifle ranges so I've been sticking with handguns.
November 3, 2007, 01:52 PM
Tag I will try it this weekend I hope
November 3, 2007, 03:03 PM
I completely missed all those challenge threads:eek: I think I will do them all at once tomorrow, if I hope I'll hit something...
November 3, 2007, 04:05 PM
Welcome aboard. I'm cooking up the next challenge even as we speak.
November 3, 2007, 05:30 PM

I can't miss that one!!! :D
November 3, 2007, 05:41 PM
I have to say that it makes me glad that people enjoy these silly challenges so much!
November 4, 2007, 08:24 AM
I'll have to do this!!
November 4, 2007, 10:49 AM
I have to say that it makes me glad that people enjoy these silly challenges so much!
It makes it a group thing and it is more fun showing each other our targets instead of just chunking them in the waste can at the range. :)
November 4, 2007, 11:01 AM
OK, tougher than I thought! I used to wheelguns, S&W 629 Classic 6", and S&W Model 19-4 4". All shots were single action, two handed standing, unsupported.
First was the .44 mag. I couldn't stay away from that white balloon for some reason! :)
Next the .38 with some old handloads I had. I'm blaming them for the terrible accuracy. :p They shot really high.
November 4, 2007, 01:59 PM
I keep telling folks that this one is a toughie but nobody believes me until they try it for themselves. I've shot this target about 9 times and don't have a perfect score yet!
November 4, 2007, 03:08 PM
First try - Model 14. This load shoots pretty much to point of aim.
I got them all with one shot!
You got some strings too. That's BONUS POINTS man!
November 4, 2007, 07:49 PM
In all the time I've known you you've always had a pretty...ummm. DIRECT approach to things <grin>.
November 4, 2007, 10:51 PM
Just being a cheapskate.:neener: On average, a box of 50 .45 ACP rounds (my principal plinking round) is 15.00 a box or about 30 cents a round. With 10 balloons, that would have cost me 3 bucks. Now, with the Wallyworld Remington Shotgun rounds being 5 bucks for 25 rounds equalling 20 cents a round.
One shot cost me 20 cents vice 3 bucks. I was even lucky enough to get some strings. :neener:
November 6, 2007, 09:46 PM
This time with my strange old CZ-52.
MAN those old mil-surp sights are hard to see indoors!
