If you misplaced your driver's license, would you use your CCW as a form of ID?

I ask because I couldn't find my license when buying a nice Merlot for dinner with my (new, pro-gun) girlfriend. After shuffling through my wallet a few times, I managed to find it, but my CCW was in there as well. I could have used the CCW because it had my date of birth on it. I keep the CCW license in a hidden pocket so people don't see it all the time when I open my wallet.

Oh, and I was carrying at the time too.

There's somewhat of an inside joke at Texas gun stores.

When they ask to see your license, don't give them your drivers license... hand them your CHL. That's what they are really asking for anyways.

I have a CCW badge and a Driver's badge as well so they see me coming. They know I'm legal to buy and packing before I even get in the store.

I also have a tattoo of chuck norris and the picattiny rails on my m-4 clone are full... two lasers, a chinese made flashlight and a periscope in case I have to duck behind walls at the mall.

Folks at the bar also know me by sight because I'm the only guy in town who wears urban camouflage and I always order a dr pepper at the bar because it keeps me alert in case there are any trouble makers. I also have my own bar stool reserved for me, because I never put my back to a door or window.

I've gotten asked for alternate ID, some bars around here don't like them. Nearest I can figure, its a college town, and MI's licenses are pretty half-assed and unprofessional looking.

I've used it even when I had my driver license on me just to see what kind of reaction it will get.

Doctor's Offices - most just shrug and copy it for their insurance forms. One asked me if I was actually armed right then which led to a discussion about whether or not the silly no guns sign on the front door would actually cause a criminal to turn around and not do the deed since guns are prohibited there. Got some funny looks from the staff who were listening and the person the point was directed at - well - you could see the light go on by the look on her face.

I especially like using it at retail stores when I know I'm going to be writing a check to pay for some large purchase. Always cracks me up when I present it and the clerk doesn't know what to do - it's not a DL and they need a DL. Call a supervisor. They do. I explain that the CCW (picture ID in OK) is issued by the OSBI, verifies that I've been vetted as a good guy by the city, state and federal governments and is way better ID than a DL. They tend to get very  . It's especially funny when I'm purchasing a high ticket item - that really throws 'em into a conundrum; accept the CCW as ID or lose the sale? :D

I play that game when I'm in an ornery mood or there's some stupid no guns sign (rare in OK) on the entrance.

I imagine some here will accuse me of just being an @ss but truth be known the number of times where folks who had no idea that citizens could carry and asked how they could get a CCW outweighs the times when I just pissed people off (which is OK too as far as I'm concerned - stupid antis :fire::cuss: ).

My daughter used her Illinois FOID card as an ID to board a plane at Midway airport last month when she forgot her drivers license at home.

Hey, it's a picture ID issued by the Illinois State Police and every bit an official form of ID as a Driver's license. Probably better sicne to get one oyu have to have a clean record.

The airline had no problem with it. (And no, the ironly wasn't lost on me)

No photos on Washington's CPL card, so it's not really handy for ID. All the same, I've used it for ID a grand total of twice in the 7 years I've had it.

1) At my employer's bank, cashing a large check for her. I showed my Driver's License but the teller wanted another form of ID -- and wouldn't accept any of my credit cards for some reason. I was thumbing through my wallet wondering what on earth she would accept when she spotted my CPL, said, "Is that a concealed carry permit? I can use that ..." Totally caught me by surprise.

2) At the DMV, I needed "two forms of government-issued ID" in order to prove that I was who I said I was and could sign the paper affirming that I was my kid's mom. The driver's license was nice but they wanted a passport or a birth certificate or a -- something more than I had on me at any rate. I finally pulled out my CPL and asked if that would do. The guy behind the counter wasn't happy to see it, but checked the acceptable list and it was on there. Heh.

Illinois FOID works great at airports. Got a puzzled look from Wal-Mart's cashier in Illinois, but in gun-friendly territory it eventually passed.

My DL picture has a full beard and does not look like me (more like a native of the Middle East). My FOID picture looks like me and some persons understand that I passed the background check with the State Patrol.

I presume that there are places where I would prefer not to use such ID.

I keep my DL and CCH license stacked atop each other in my window-wallet. So, when I slap it open to show my ID I don't have to remove it. I wrote a check the other day and they wanted me to actually pull out my DL and give it to them, so I did...exposing what looked exactly like another DL behind it (except it was marked CCH rather than DL) the pimple faced kid behind the register asked me why I had two driver's licenses. I told him "one's for my friend here but they needed a picture so they put mine on it because I'm the only one who can see him."

I make it a point to NEVER EVER show my CCH in public or to purposefully print my sidearm. I find that the kind of folks who do are a disappointment.
I have pulled my CCH out one time, at the gun shop...when a fella was asking about the classes and the clerk was too young to have taken them so couldn't answer his questions. I pulled it out for the fella when he asked "is it exactly like a driver's license?" It wasn't like show-and-tell day.

I must have missed that part in the CHL class and when reading Texas code. Can you cite the section of code for that? It was my understanding that the CHL could be used as a valid ID. As a mattter of fact, I think I recall something about needig a valid DL OR a valid state ID to apply for a CHL...not everyone has a drivers license. My mother-in-law has never had a drivers license but is completelt leigible for a CHL.

Can you cite the section of code for that?
TX Government Code sec 411.205(a)

§ 411.205. DISPLAYING LICENSE; PENALTY. (a) If a license holder is carrying a handgun on or about the license holder's person when a magistrate or a peace officer demands that the license holder display identification, the license holder shall display both the license holder's driver's license or identification certificate issued by the department and the license holder's handgun license. A person who fails or refuses to display the license and identification as required by this subsection is subject to suspension of the person's license as provided by Section 411.187.

For some reason, I took my DL out of wallet and left on my desk. Had to fly the next day and did not realize until I was in the "papers, please" line at airport. Airport was BWI (in Baltimore, MD), and the TSA check-in clerk didn't know what a (Pennsylvania) CWP was:banghead:. She called the supervisor over and he said, "No problem, have a nice trip". Returning from Ohio, they just waved me through.

At the risk of getting flamed, I voted yes I would "IF" I misplaced my DL and "IF" I really had to.
However, I never advertize my postion or my piece on myself or on my property. I know where I stand and until it matters no one else needs to. My instructor said something that has always stuck with me, "Save the bumpersticker for the range box."

No where in the code does it say anything about the CHL being invalid. Not having a valid CHL would mean that you are going to jail for the illegal possesion of a concealed weapon...that is not what this code says. We are really talking about two different charges here...one is way more severe than the other. Second point being...a driver's license is not required...just a second form of ID issued by DPS i.e. a state ID card. Third point...the second ID is only required when dealing with a magistrate or peace officer when he/she demands Identification i.e. in a traffic stop or something. The CHL is an approved form of valid ID for anything and everything that a DL License or State ID would be valid for.

I know I was playing with symantics but the point is a DL is not required...only a second form of ID issued by DPS and only when dealing with a magistrate or peace officer. losing the DL or State ID does not make the CHL invalid...a simple reissuance of said ID would be in order but it does not invalidate the CHL. Wrong information on the CHL (for a reasonable period of time) does not make it invalid either. I recently purchased a new house and had to have my DL renewed with new address. I received my new DL in 10 days but a new CHL could take up to 60 days. I called DPS (twice just to make sure...speaking with different reps) who said that i was still legally allowed to carry eventhough the addresses did not match.

Ours looks really close to our driver's license, mine even have the same numbers on them. On days when I am not driving, don't plan to drive especially if I am dressed down to go flot the river of somthing, I will carry just my CWL especially since I usually have the CCW with me as well. I used it for ID all the time. Buy smokes, beer (to be consumed later) or to rwite a check, they sit in my wallet in the same pocket, whichever one is on top gets used. May be the state I am in, but not one funny glance or even a second look.

Of course, I use it to buy new firearms as well as this lets me avoid the hassle of the NICS check.

It's the other way around for me. I must have one of the last non-photo driver's licenses in the U.S. That will end in April when I have to renew it. I use my military ID with my DL if they want a photo ID. If they insist on a photo ID with my address on it my CCL is the only thing I have.

When I got printed for an out-of-state CCW, I gave the local officer my NY license, along with my DL. He said, "Oh, I don't need that." Funny, because the NY one meant I'd already been printed.

Slightly related:
We used to go to a sushi place that had this really funny waitress. Good kid, owned about five ferrets, two birds, etc. One night I clipped my NRA card onto the tablet with the bill. She didn't look until she got to the register. Very funny. :D

They are an acceptable form of ID in Banking.

My employer's bank requires two valid, government issued photo ids to cash a payroll check if the person does not have an account. Since I don't carry a passport, the carry permit is the second id. Only one teller has ever made a comment, and that was to the effect that it was not a government issued id. I asked her when the state of Florida stopped being a government, and the branch manager told her to accept the id. Other than that, they don't bat an eyelash. I am not the only person who uses it as a second form of id.

If I didn't have my DL my CHL would be worthless here in NC. Law says you have to carry both. As it is they are both in one of those pull out flaps in my wallet. That way they are always together. My lifetime hunting license stays behind the CHL too. NC Game laws say it's useless without a photo ID. I guess my point is I make a point to make sure I have all three at all times :)

Turned out I didn't have my wallet on me (doh!) but I did have my other little ID wallet that is used just for my CWP and some emergency #s (incl lawyers). I tried to use the CWP as a form of ID since it is a state-issued photo ID, but they wouldn't take it (the girl at the table got all wierded out about it too). I have no problems whatsoever using my CCW permit in such a case. I wouldn't make a big showing of it flashing it around though. There is always the slim chance of being followed home and robbed by a snooping criminal that sees it, which does occasionally happen but IMHO is far too rare of an incident to worry about.

But, I just love the tin foil hat folks that don't want anyone to even know they have a CCW permit out of tear they will have their doors kicked in by the Jack Booted Thugs.

http://www.tfhp.org/images/tinfoil-hat.jpg

In fact, I know a VERY pro-gun guy that won't even get a CCW permit because he is convinced it becomes public info that can be used against him. For example, he envisions himself being shot dead during a routine traffic stop after exiting his vehicle because the dispatchers tells the officers there he has a concealed weapon permit. :uhoh:

I used my Illinois FOID card once to try and buy a beer in another state and had the police called on me because the waiter and the manager both thought it was bogus.

The Police said that my name and DOB checked out but the restaurant had no obligation to return my ID to me. Cop mentioned he'd never heard of needing a permit to own a gun.

It took over an hour of wrangling with the manager before she would even give me my ID back.

Also, one time out with my entire family I used it in an Illinois restaurant and the waiter wouldn't accept it while making the comment, "You aren't carrying a firearm now, are you?" He'd never seen one before, either.

I don't know what FOIDs look like now, but the one I had looks like a fifth grader had a go at making it with a pair of round-tip scissors and a manual typewriter.

All other times I've been asked for ID (like when buying ammo at Wal-Mart) I've been open carrying, so the whole "rifle or handgun?" question is a bit unnecessary.

I recently ordered a very expensive item from a NYC-based store (they have a brick-and-mortar shop in addition to their online site).

There were some billing issues, complicated in part because my current residence (which is relatively recent) is not the same as my billing address. They were unable to confirm some information with my bank, so they asked if I could fax in a scan of government-issued ID for verification.

I sent them a scan of my employee ID, my driver's licence (which has my current residence) and my CCDW permit (which, at the time, had my previous residence listed which was the billing address).

The next thing I heard was that the order was shipping out that day.

Why not. It's valid ID in CT.. I am not afraid to let people see I may have a gun.. Of course I would use discretion if there is anyone in line behind me or too many people working at a counter or some similar situation.
