surprisingly unbiased points from a liberal journalist (he could have added more clariications or skipped some comments, but he was more on target than the majority of his partners-in-crime).

That was an impressive piece. Very eloquent and well spoken.

A machine gun can no more launch an attack without a machine gunner than an oboe is to play Mozart without a musician.

Priceless!

Good thing Hugh retired. His job prospects within the Liberal Press would be non-existant. Too bad he couldn't have taken the last step and spoken up for 2A as an individual right. Give him a B+

THE SECOND AMENDMENT GUARANTEES ALL THE OTHERS.

I have a tape recording made by Downs wherein he supports the decriminalization of Marijuana. He makes great points in that tape.

I don't think he is Liberal at all. He is more of a Libertarian.

It's amazing what people will say when they can't be fired anymore.

IIRC, Hugh Downs goes back quite a ways with support for guns and by extension RKBA. This would be back when he was on TV. I remember discussing it on Rec.guns quite a few years back. One of the good guys, imho.

This Hugh Downs thing goes back quite a ways. I first saw it on rec.guns back in 1994.

I'm pretty sure that Hugh Downs is a Libertarian. A few quotes of his that back this up:

"Some Americans who have read [Harry Browne's] book Why Government Doesn't Work are wondering why they ever voted for those other two parties." -- "Perspective" radio commentary, July 1996.

"I think it might be important to point out that this country is a one-party country. Half of that party is called Republican and half is called Democrat. It doesn't make any difference. All the really good ideas belong to the Libertarians." -- guest appearance on "Politically Incorrect," April 1997.

"Every year, Libertarians gain more registered voters -- defections from the two big parties. They also offer an alternative to (what many people see as) the tired twosome." -- "Perspective" radio commentary, July 7, 1996.

Very nice article. I notice that he's making points that are very similar to those in the "The Aesthetics of the Gun Debate" article on Oleg's site. Perhaps he's been there? (Great work, Oleg! I think your site represents the case for RKBA in a very powerful way. Your photos are awesome!)

He's obviously very familiar with firearms--note his references to the BAR and the 7400.
