$1.8m to shoot Army base kangaroos
By_Fia Cumming
October 6 2002
The Sun-Herald

The Defence Department paid $1.8 million for kangaroos to be shot on its Puckapunyal Army base, equivalent to $120 a head.

While the Army has plenty of crack shooters in its own ranks, the department brought in outside professionals to cull 15,000 kangaroos.

The six-week cull, which began late in May, was supervised by the RSPCA but it has attracted strong criticism from animal welfare groups.

Ten professionals were hired to shoot up to 100 kangaroos a day, but averaged only half that.

The Defence Department has suggested that the kill could become an annual event. But Denise Garratt, director of Help for Wildlife, said the massive cost would be far better spent on contraception programs.

She said the killing involved great cruelty to joeys, many of which were left in their mothers' pouches to die.

Kangaroo numbers had exploded at Puckapunyal, a 42,000ha property in central Victoria, with estimates of up to 80,000 animals.

Labor MP Anthony Byrne has also attacked the expensive cull, saying taxpayers should not have footed the bill.

Mr Byrne said managing the kangaroos was part of the responsibility of the company which holds the maintenance contract for the base.

Mr Byrne, the MP for Holt, said SSL Asset Services became responsible for managing the kangaroos under a last-minute addition to the contract signed in March 2000.

He said the addendum was added after three enviromental officers from the Defence Estate Organisation were sacked as a cost-cutting measure.

Sounds like the waste of a good live fire exercise to me. Especially if the troops don't hunt otherwise and have no idea what violent death looks/smells like. Lots cheaper too.

But of course that would be expecting logic and reason from a .gov agency

The only good news is that we in the US don't have exclusive possession of stupid politicians or administrators. Condoms for roos? Who's crazy enough to try to put one on a roo? :D Sadly, it would have been good practice for the snipers but nooooo, they had to hire professionals.

You know "bang! caCHING!" implies a semi-automatic or self-loading action.

You also know we're not allowed to have those in case ... ummm ... in case ... in case we poke our eye out! :o

You're a worry, Jim. :D

But Denise Garratt, director of Help for Wildlife, said the massive cost would be far better spent on contraception programs.

What she means is that the current overpopulous generation should be allowed to just starve quietly to death...
Much more politically correct than shooting them humanely.

Interesting animal the roo,,,,, has the physiological ability to either reabsorb embryos, or just place them on hold for some time untill the nutritional situation picks up again. Which is one reason why I think she's jumping (hopping) to conclusions WRT claims of young-uns being left todie when their dams are shot.

Since when did logic matter to these animal-crackers?

They had to hire professional shooters .

The Army is terrified of the PR backlash should any diggers be involved in such activity. If you saw their recruiting ads you'd know why: they're all touchy feely "I learned a trade and here I am helping to rebuild a school in a third world country" type stuff. All very nice and all, but some in the Defence Department seem horrified at the thought that members of at least some arms may be required to involve themselves in violence.

How'd they handle disposal of the bodies? That might've jacked up the price a bit. Killin' 'em is one thing. Getting rid of the big, smelly, pile of corpses is another.

Imagine the training potential, though ...
Train soldiers to hunt for and shoot an actual critter.
They get to see what gunshot wounds really look like.
Mass-casualty clean-up operation.

Contraception program? Duh?

This gives me a picture of multitudes of high school Sex-Ed teachers rounding up roos, a banana in one hand and a condom in the other.

"This is how..."

Oh, never mind...

Gary....

The front-line troops are arguably still as good as they ever were.... and I have some mates among them who are anything BUT Politically Correct. (and we still have a males-only policy for army combat roles) But the PR, the politics and the bullsh are ever-growing.

Cheers....... Peter (another Aus)

Yeah, its certainly no criticism of the soldiers that the political masters and spin merchants want to paint them as PC.

When I last wore the green suit a few years ago it was routine on the live firing ranges for an instruction to be given along the lines of "IF ANY OF YOU @#$% SHOOT A @#$% ROO YOU"LL BE ON A @#$% CHARGE"

That's strange... I didn't know I could speak Australian, but that came across perfectly - just like my old shooting instructor during my own military service, many years and a continent away! :D
