Unknown Magazines

September 18, 2007, 09:12 PM
Hello, I've been lurking here for quite xome time and have learned a great deal from reading the posts.

Anyway, I inherited some rifles from my uncle. I am familiar with everything I recieved except for some magazines. They are all the same, but have no identifying markings. Is there a dimensioned list I can look at to help determine what they could go to?

If someone thinks they can identify them by sight, I can try to post a picture
(or 2).

Good question. I'm thinking M14 magazine.

Think I'll go with M-14/M1A also!

I believe you guys are right! I got a hold of a .308 cartridge and it fits in there perfectly do the caliber is correct. I looked up some M14 Magazine pics and it is dead-on.

Now I guess I have to ask myself: I have 8 magazines and no rifle to go with them... :)

Time to research the M14 (I know nothing about them).

Thanks for everyones help.

Best to research the M1A.
You can't have (or rather afford) a real M-14 anyway.

Oh M14/M1A = M16/AR-15 kinda thing, huh. Well, that proves how much I don't know about them!

(Now that Big Brother has marked me as someone looking to buy a M14 - ha ha ha)

Well, time to dig in. Everytime I buy, I research this site HEAVILY. I have already purchased a few handguns and rifles since my Uncle passed. Before then I did own a single firearm. I remember my Uncle taking me out to shoot when I was a youngster and he swore I was a "natural". He left his collection to me and it kick started me into the hobby.

At this point I have added significantly to my (newly aquired) safe, picked up my great grandfather's old rusty shotguns (and got them back to working shape), took some training and got my CCW. I think my uncle would be proud to know that I know share his love for firearms.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and sharing your knowledge for those of us who are still learning the ropes!

At first I thought it was an M1 Carbine 15-round mag with a funny lip. But then I noticed that the mag was far too large and I thought "Could he really not know what an M14 Mag looks like..?".
I thought M14 was too obvious.
Apparently, it wasn't.
No offense meant, just my musings.

great to hear you have a new hobby and some heirloom weapons. I wish I was as lucky. But, my kids and grandkids will have rooms full:D

Another vote for M14.
You said they're unmarked, so could be T57 mags.

Check the back side of teh mag for a W stamped in, or BW, or smomething to see if it's GI.

Be warned: M1A's are not cheap (generally they go from about $1500-$2500). However, they're pretty nice rifles, and given that you've already got some mags.....well, I'd say that's a perfect excuse to get one.

That is with out a doubt an M14 magazine.
If it is USGI there will be marking stamped on the flat back down low such as
W for Westinghouse
OM of Olin Mathisen (sp?) i.e. Winchester
and several other contractors

They may be faint and hard to see.

If there are no markings then they may be Chinese type 57. These are also good mags. There are a whole bunch of fakes out there. The M14forum provides a lot of discussion on M14 mag identification.

New mags made by the current contractor, CMI, are available for about $25 each from 44mag.com just to give you an idea of the value.
