I was wondering what pistols are carried by agents working for federal agencies. Is there a required pistol or does it just have to fit certain qualifications?

Varies by agencies and duty assignment with in the agency.

Also, there are pistols that are issued and those that are approved for duty/off-duty use.

The Glock 22 and Sig P229 seem to be two of the most common.

Federal Protective Service seems to use Ruger GP100's though I have seen one person with what looked like a Sig of some kind.

Coast Guard and others have been getting the new SIG DAK's. FBI issues two sizes of .40 Glock.

Border Patrol has been using .40 Beretta 96's, DA only. May be getting the SIG DAK's, though.

An FBI agent who posts on the S&W forum carries a grandfathered SIG P-220 .45, and says that no revolvers at all are allowed anymore, even off duty.

FBI issues Glock 22 and 23 - choice of the agent which one they want.

There's probably other choices offered, I just know those two are available to FBI agents.

ICE are already transitioning to Sigs. DHS awarded Sig a contract for 65,000 handguns in 9mm , .357 Sig, and .40 S&W

I believe they also awarded HK an Contract for USPs and P2000 and P2000Sks in the same calibers.

DHS covers a lot of agencies like USSS, Air Marshals, USCG, ICE ect.

Department of Interior and the Department of Agriculture which includes park police, mint police, and park rangers use Sigs. Most of them have their choice between 9mm, .40S&W, or .45acp in Sig 226, 228, 229, or 220. They also usually authorize the 225 or 239 for those with smaller hands.

Every Border Patrol Agent I've seen in Blaine WA has had an H&K. Either P2000 or USPc.

Close -
Customs doesn't exist anymore. It's all CBP. It will be either a G17 (if they're old Customs guys or fairly new -about 2005 -CBP hires) or H&K P2000 .40LEM (if they're former INS or new hire CBP). You must carry the issued gun on duty. :)

ATF carries SIGs. Most Federal agencies only allow you to carry the issue sidearm. Some have several issue. DFBI agents can carry a gun they were issued, and there are still a few agents with revolvers (old timers).

The only Federal agency that I am aware of that lets agents carry POWs (Personally owned weapons) is the US Marchsls service, which used to allow deputries to carry anything in an approved caliber. I don;t know of that is still true, but it was the case when my wife was a deputy in the mid 1980s (The isue gun was the model 66 IIRC, and she carried a SIG P225).

Read that the Coast Guard will be loading JHP ammo for civilian maritime law enforcement assignments and FMJ ammo for military missions.

I have a 2.5" nickel plated S&W Model 19 that was shipped to U.S. Customs.

But that was in 1970 when cops carried guns with panache.
