I'm going to get some 8"x8" .25" steel plates to use as hanging targets for 9mm/.40 S&W/.45acp, what kind of steel do I need and about roughly how much should I expect tp pay??

.25" mild steel is not going to cut it, for those rounds you need .375" for them to hold up. If you don't have any metal working equipment you are better off buying pre made targets. Do a search on google and you'll find many different places.

Go to a scrap yard and ask if they have any knock-outs. They are round and come in all sizes and thicknesses. and you will be paying salvage prices instead of new if you cut up plate steel

I used chrome moly 4140 to good effect over the years. We shoot mostly pistol rounds at my plates. Rifle rounds have a tendency to beat up the plates pretty badly under 200 yards.
