hey on my 1911 springfield. if i add a add on light rail.(home protection use with a light) but i dont use the light for IPSC. what class will that put me in. right now im single stack. but will a add on rail move me? and where? im thinking its no different than a operator or tactical 1911.... would that be single stack since its just a rail and will give no advantage? im asking so i know if i should perament mount it or just lock tight the rail on.

In USPSA, in the 1911 Single Stack division light attachments are not allowed.
But the gun would be a legal Production (if it came from the factory like that), Limited, and Limited 10. And in almost every case it will be a major PF gun in Limited and Limited 10.
In IPSC I am not too up on the rules, but I believe that it would be allowed in all the divisions, but they don't have a single stack division at the moment.

Nyet. Single-action pistols are specifically verboten in USPSA Production. It would be legal in Limited/Limited 10.

First there is no single stack in IPSC. Single stack is a USPSA division. Second a single action pistol is not allowed in production. Third you can have a light rail on a SS pistol but it must be factory installed and no longer than 3.25" when measured from the rear of the slide stop pin to the front of the dustcover. Adding a rail to your 1911 would move you to Open. You can not add weight to the frame of a pistol in Limited or Limited 10.

Forgot about the double action rule.

Not according to the 2008 proposed rules, it says no attachment points for lights or optics.

I can't find an approved 2008 rulebook only the draft copy on the USPSA web site. Factory installed light rails were still allowed in SS, in that copy. Since colbyjacks 1911 doesn't have a factory rail it's a moot point. If he wants to use the pistol he owns he needs to leave it as is or expect to be moved to open if he adds a rail.

I was just mentioning it since he is considering what would happen if he added a rail.

I don't think I'd want to run screws in and out too many times. Sounds like you found a good excuse to buy a new gun:)

As others have said, you'll be put into Open Division if you add a light rail. I had the same situation, wanting a competition gun that I could also use for home defense. Eventually, I just got a used plastic gun with light rail for HD (Glock, XD, MP, etc). It's much better this way as now I know my HD gun is always ready to go and not in my range bag or in the middle of being cleaned or out to the pistolsmith, etc.
