Well, unfortunately my current EDC isn't working so well. I have a Kershaw 1550ST, the Ken Onion blackout with assisted opening. The torsion bar is dead, and of course I'm using this as an excuse to get a nice new knife. (Yes, I'll follow up with Kershaw about the warranty)

I've searched around, and found a couple that I've been eyeing. The Spyderco Endura Wave as I like the idea of the wave method for opening, and the Benchmade Griptilian. As soon as I think I've chosen one I switch back to the other! So, for under $100 (I like the Emerson knives, but I can't swing $200 for a knife right now) do you have any other suggestions? :D

If you're looking for a one hand opening knife for under $100, IMHO the Benchmade Griptilian is the knife to get. I carried one every day for a couple of years until I went back to a Victorinox Pioneer SAK.

Gosh, it's going to come down to which you like the feel of better between those two. Both are excellent knives. I'd get the non-Wave Spydy myself. You'll find that the wear and tear on your trousers of playing with the wave will get old. If I were getting the Griptilian I'd spring for the Equipped To Survive RSK-1 model (http://www.equipped.com/rsk_mk1.htm). Just $7 over the $100 limit, but supporting a great site and someone actually fighting for your rights wrt knives.

RE: Kershaw. Their warranty service is fantastic. When I broke my Blur, I spent all morning concocting some silly no-fault story about dropping it off a roof. When I called, the lady didn't even wanted to hear it, just send in the knife and we'll get you out a new one quick. Very pleasant, and she sounded cute too.


I have to cast my vote for benchmade, too. But between your two choices it's merely a matter of taste.

my EDCs are benchmade (mel pardue), emerson (hd-7), chris reeve (small sebenza) and kershaw (chive). i know that kinda defeats the purpose of a single EDC knife, but i like having different options based on the environment and situation.

generally not a fan of spyderco and CRKT.

You really can't go wrong with the benchmades, although i stopped carrying my mel pardue and use my emerson HD-7 and Blade-tech hunter. i like a very slim knife for edc, so you might consider a kershaw blur with the S30V blade.

One more quick question, is there a significant difference in the thickness between the Griptilian and the Endura? I have pretty big mits, and I can't tell from pictures if the Endura looks really slim or not.

I have big hands too. I happen to edc both the Spyderco Waved Endura and the Benchmade (full size) Grip. The Grip is thicker than the Endura. But, both fit my hand very nicely.

If you shop wisely, you can have both for $120. I paid $60 each for both of these knives. I'm fortunate enough to have a guy near me that owns an internet knife business and I buy from him and pick them up in person to avoid shipping.

Although, the Ritter Grip does look very nice.

I'm saving to buy one soon.

proven design + very good steel. There has probably been more real world testing of that knife than anything in recent memory and all the commentary I've seen has been favorable. In addition Doug is a very decent guy - knowledgeable and committed to fighting for our knife rights. If there is a downside I suppose it might be running into him at the next S.H.O.T. show while carrying it. He'll stand there and talk to you about it for 10 minutes or so.:D

Well I ended up getting the Endura as I got a smoking deal on it. Just got it today, and wow!, what a great knife! Feels very solid and is quite sharp already. Makes me wonder what those Sebenza's are like.... :) Guess I'll watch out for a Griptilian next. :D
