I recently inherited a Smith & Wesson .38 Special. I am interested in knowing what year it was made and possibly a range of the going prices for these types of pistols.

The barrel has engraved on one side 38 S.&W. SPECIAL CTG, the other side simply states Smith & Wesson.

The grip is wood with a copper S&W logo inlay.

The serial begins D280XXX.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

smq0405, based on the serial number you have provided it looks like you have either a S&W Model 10, 12 or 14 revolver. Your serial number indicates it was made around 1969-1970. You would need to post many more details, maybe even some pictures before anyone could begin to give you an idea as to value for your revolver.
