I have a really good load for my 243 Win and showed off one of my targets to a friend at work. He said he has been thinking about reloading so I offered to let him come to the house and load whatever he wanted while I taught him. The only caliber we have in common that he is interested in loading for right now is 243 Win but he said he hears that the NEFs have notoriously long throats. I don't know from experience since the only NEF I have is a single shot 17 HMR...hell of a fun and accurate little rifle for $120 by the way. Anyway...does anyone know if this long throat rumor is true? My loads were developed in my Browning A-bolt. Would it be a fair test to let him shoot some of my handloads and see how they work and if they aren't as accurate seat them out a little further? If I do seat them out further is there any predictable outcome? I did not notice much difference in my load between the charge I settled on and the one that was half a grain lower so if I only seat them out a tad then he might not notice a difference right? If we have to seat them out further are all bets off...i.e. should we start all over with the lowest charge and work up just to be safe? I know that was long winded and full of questions so thank you very much for reading it and replying if you are so inclined.

They are long throated.

You need a chamber gauge to measure the length of the chamber and to establish seating depth. I'd start about .010" off the lands.
Midway sells them under the Hornady brand. I believe they now call them lock and load.
There are other ways to do it , but in my IMHO this is best. Check each gun independantly, as the they will likely be different.
