Walter P-22 going back to S&W again!...POS

I have been a lurker for a while and have read a few post about this particular gun. I bought mine late last year and have already returned it once to get a replacement, and now the replacement is going back again for the same reason.

The problem with my p-22 is unusual slide and frame wear. I dont know what it is called but there is a bump on the right side of the frame and the slide will actually cut a gouge in to that bump. There is also a lot of scaring up and down that area of the frame. I returned it and S&W sent me a new one. The Customer service is actually really good which i liked but what use is CS if the guns are sub-par quality?...

Well FedEx just picked up my gun yesterday and its on it way back. At this point i dont want another p-22, I want my money back. If smith can make a decent auto gun, thats it, no more for me. I will sell it back and loose money than keep that thing.

BTW, i clean and lude the thing after every range trip. Everytime i stripped that gun i watched the gouge get bigger and bigger

Isn't a POG like one of those old milk bottle caps?

What is a POG?

Anyway, Ruger and Browning .22s are good. I have a Bersa 23 in .22lr and it is now my favorite .22 pistol for plinking. It is reliable now after the break-in and it is very accurate. It is one of those guns that is just plain fun to shoot! I have seen some Bersa Thunders in .22 that seem to be the same gun but with a slide release lever, cool.

I looked at one of those in a gun shop. It looked and felt as though it had been designed and built down to a price—but the price wasn't very impressive.

Get a Ruger MkII. Got my blued 5.5" bull barrelled MKII for $350 OTD. Shoots super accurate.

Really like the stainless 6.5" inch MKII. Surprisingly accurate. I don't really think the bull barrel is necessary and it ads weight. How fast can you really load those ten round mags even with that big loading box they sell?

Spot77 got it.This is supposed to be a family friendly gun site and i think we should ALL use POG in place of POS.;)

You can load them faster than you can shoot and unload the pistol. If you have someone loading for you, you can continuously shoot. You push the magzine into the box and the rounds fall right into the magazine.

hello,

is any P22 owner experiencing this kind of wear on their slide ?

POG? Hey, I love that game! :D

Very popular in the late 80's to early 90's IIRC. It's where you slam a round thingy, a cardboard or plastic chip?? against other chips. Those that flipped over is captured. Whoever captures the most, wins! Used to have canloads of those... <sigh>

Anyways, sorry 'bout your P-22. Like they said, get rid of it. No sense being stuck with an unreliable, defective plinker.

I've seen 3 of these being shot in person at the range and every one of them was a jam-o-matic. I also hear a lot of bad reports on them online. I'm glad I waited to see how they worked before I put down my money. I won't be buying one now.

Thanks for being honest about your problems. Some people are embarassed to admit that they bought a POS. I think it makes some people feel like fools but it shouldn't, it should make the company that made and sold the POS to you feel like fools. Also some people will make fun of you for admitting that your gun was a lemon as if it is somehow your fault.

If I get a POS gun, I want others to know about it so they don't make the same mistake as me. I have a feeling that for every good report a gun gets, 2-3 bad reports go unreported due to the reasons stated above. I will probably get flamed now because I insulted someone's favorite pistol but I don't really care. We need to focus on the bad guns and let everyone know which guns are risky. If I wanted to hear sugar coated stories about how great every gun is, I would just read the gun rags.

I think that can be turned around the other way also.

For every Bad report, Many Good reports go unreported. :D

One thing I have learned is that you should not believe everything you read or hear, take ones opinion for what it is worth. :D

I just finished examining my P-22 and it does not show the wear yours does.

It has also been completely reliable (I only use high velocity ammo in mine ~ lately CCIs new Velocitors).

Hope you get it all sorted out, as I think these are fun, light and easy to carry little pistols... Mine goes with me anytime I'm working around the place and has accounted for a fair number of bothersome critters. In fact, there is a second one waiting for me at my dealer, which I will pick up in just a few hours... WooHoo!

Good luck

I too seem to have been an unlucky(do I have any other kind of luck) individual in regards to a P22. Here's a link to my updated posts regarding what I have experienced to date:

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1793&highlight=P22

Strange thing is that there doesn't seem to be a common thread with the later issues with the P22. Earlier feed problems seemed to be related to the early non -A suffixed mags. The later issues, so far, haven't been diagnosed in any in depth or manner.

In my case, the original P22 seemed to function fine with the -A mag that I used, but S&W/Walther replaced the entire pistol. I don't believe this was necessary and in fact, I received a replacement P22 that turned out to be incorrectly assembled. This fact was revealed when I disassembled the barrel sleeve from the right side plate/receiver bridge, finding that the sleeve had not been properly aligned when assembled. This damaged the aligning protrusion the barrel sleeve notch indexes upon. This pistol has since been returned to S&W/Walther. Check the link.

Funny to see somebody complaining that their P-22 is a lemon, and folks tell them to buy a Neos or a Trailside. Haven't those two generated a fair number of lemon threads of their own?

The only problems I've observed firsthand with P-22's were crappy mags in the first ones. Apparently the magazine design was changed, and now pretty much everyone I know who has one is happy.

Out of curiousity, wuhungsix, does the little wear mark have any effect on the performance of the gun? Is the firearm reliable and accurate? Is the wear mark visible when the gun is assembled for firing?

the pictures posted by psywar earlier are the same exact wear...(this just in) as i was typing this post guess what...call from S&W offering me a replacement but this time any S&W firearm with in reason...he offered me a 22a or a 908 in a 9mm ...i originally sent them a letter requesting a full refund ...i dunno if i want any of these...need to do some research on these guns first...i feel like they are trying to get out of paying me

Tamara,

That's the thing that really got to me with my first P22. When I used the one -A suffixed mag, I experienced but a very few feed errors(which could have been a fluke) and they were all related to two types of ammo(if memory serves). However, using the tow non -A suffixed mags that came with the pistol.... well, the FTF's were considerably more numerable. I figured that when I explained this in the email to Walther CS(read S&W), they would jsut request the non -A mags be shipped and new -A mags would be issued. But no, they wanted me to return all components along with the P22.

I did so(with the 3.4" barrel installed). S&W returned my 5" target barrel before I received the replacement P22, as they didn't have any in stock at the time. So when I reecived a replacement P22, it came with the 3.4" barrel installed. I field stripped, cleaned & lubed said replacement and then put it in the safe, as I knew that I wouldn't have the spare time for a range session. A bit later, after ammo reliability testing and cleaning, I decided to replace the 3.4" barrel with the 5" target barrel and rerun the tests. That's when I found the barrel sleeve to have been installed incorrectly. It may also explain why the barrel nut kept loosening during the ammo testing.

So far, I haven't received any answers/inquiries from S&W/Walther since they've had the pistol, other than that which I've indicated on my other post on this topic.
