Hello all...I was going through the safe and found a S&W 36-no dash, square butt that I did not remember I had. It does not have any grips and is as new on the left side and about 70% on the right. The S/N is 5512xx.

Anyone have idea when the lil gun was made. How bout a good place to find some grips.

Thanks for the help.

Z.

Made between 1962 - 1969.
I can't pin it down any closer then that.
Factory records in my book aren't year specific in that date range on the early J-frames.
You would have to get a factory letter to pin it down exactly.

Can't help you with grips, other then look around any large gun-show.
There is bound to be some there.

Now wait a minute.

Does the serial number have a J prefix?

If so, it IS newer then that!

Serial number J5512xx would be 1976 - 1977.

FYI there are plenty of S&W grips (stocks) on a certain well-known internet auction site that start with "e".

The 36-1 came out in 1967 so yours (no dash) would be narrowed down even more to 1962 - 1966/67.

There are some real purdy Jay Scott grips on Gunbroker (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=81665234) right now for $20

I also have a SB M-36. These are the grips I went with.

I like them much better than the factory grips it originally came with.

Hi,

I got a no dash 36 a couple of weeks ago. It is a fantastic shooter too, and looks great! Original rosewood grips too . . . serial numbered to the gun.

It's serial number is 3019XX, and someone on the S&W forum dated it to between 1963-1965. Hopefully this will help you narrow the date of yours down even better.
