Regular defensive rifle and pistol ammo is easy to find. But where would I get bulk buckshot and slugs at a reasonable price to stock up on. The stores only carry five round boxes as you all know. Quality that you would trust your life to.

I've purchased large quantities of buck from Ammoman for classes:

As a search here will suggest, you would do well to pattern any particular load in the barrel you intend to use prior to investing in any significant quantities of buck.

The only place I've been able to find bulk quantities of 00 buck and slug is at gun shows... :(

I believe you can still get S&B from Natchez for a good price. It patterns quite a bit larger than the premium loads, but I've never had a problem firing it.

The Wal-mart here has Winchester unplated 00 buckshot and hollowpoint slugs in 15-round boxes for $7.22. I've been stocking up myself.

Define bulk. A box of 25? A case of 200/250? Ten cases?

Do you want the cheapest cr@p-1950's tech era unplated, unbuffered shot-- you can lay your hands on- or something that might actually pattern well? Low recoil or standard slugs?

Things to consider.

In slugs I like Brenneke though I have had decent luck with Remington reduced recoil, I'm lucky my guns like them, some don't. Most any of the name brand Foster type slugs are good enough for 100 yard work in truth. It's the buckshot to me that is alot more difficult to decipher.

I went back and read the original post... one of the three sentences posted is
"Quality that you would trust your life to."

texasred: have you considered handloading?

Ammunition To Go (http://www.ammunitiontogo.com) has some 250rd packs that come out to be around $.50/shell after shipping. I've heard good things about the Fiocchi Reduced Recoil buckshot.

Wolf buckshot is pretty good too, but full recoil. It's made in Germany, not Russia.

never had any problems with wolf ammo.

seems to be cheaper per 100 than the nobel stuff (http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=293300).

What's a life worth? Depends on whose it is. I hold mine rather dearly....yours not so much...the scumbag breaking into my home with deadly intent...not at all.

If you really are planning to use this ammo to possibly save your life you need to shoot it in your gun first and see what it does. Figure out what the most probable distances of engagement are and shoot it in the EXACT gun you would be using.

Decide whether you want a wide or small pattern....how many fliers are acceptable to you? Are you planning on facing down a mob post Apocalypse where you really don't care how many fliers there are (BONUS HIT!) or are you trying to peel some psychopath off your daughter with a very careful shot and even one flier will spell doom?

Me, I shoot good quality ammo- Old pre Federal Estate, Federal with flite control, Hornady Tap, Speer Lawman......I wouldn't use PMC, RIO, Wolf, Sellier etc....unless I was thinking post Teotwawki mob control and didn't really give a flip about bystanders and pure economy was the only concern. Those loads for the most part use softer shot, it is unbuffered and some have no wad....

Figure out what you want it for, then shoot it in your gun and see if you get the results you want based on intended use/needs. Despite popular cultures many myths, the shotgun is a thinking man's weapon-it is actually quite complicated....The thinking should start BEFORE you throw it up to your shoulder and let go 8-12 pellets.
