Iraq Situation

I know this is not a typical topic here, but I don't know where to post it! MSNBC doesn't allow peons to comment!

To make it a little more on topic, check out this quote:

"We should focus less on the bomb than on the bombmaker," Votel had often said. Couldn't agree more. But I digress. The important part:

Synopsis: Insurgents are using a newer, deadly type of bomb that is buried directly underneath the intended target. It uses a shaped charge to propel a copper slug through the vehicle's armor. Techniques to jam or prematurely detonate it sometimes work, but nearly enough. You can't up-armor against this type of attack.

I have a proposed solution that the article does not contemplate. The bomb is always made with a metal component. It has to be, an explosive charge just isn't going to have enough of an effect on an armored target. Why not run a small, diesel-operated, automatically controlled vehicle that stays 100' in front of your convoy with a METAL DETECTOR on it? If it finds something, drop a shaped charge on top of it (pointing down) that you keep on the IED detector car and detonate the IED.

This doesn't prevent side attacks, just the type of attacks described in the article that are apparently the biggest problem. Am I making sense or have I suggested a Goldbergesque contraption that will not work in combat situations? Anyone with any experience on this subject?

That is a fairly decent idea, and I dont know why somethign similar hasn't been produced.

My idea (I'm a programmer, which is why its so complicated ;) ) was to combine a camera, with some electro-current sensors (basically a devices that can detect the electro-magnetic field of circuitry/wires, basically any active current), and perhaps some sort of density tester.

The electrocurrent sensors (i know they have them, just not sure how they work, or what they are properly called) could detect the necessary electronics, such as a cell phone for remote detonation (which brings up an interesting point, why not try to detect RF/cell traffic? ) , the density sensor(doesn't IR or something have this ability?) could be tuned to find metals, and a camera could identity locations (give a target to the lead car).

THEN, (to keep this gun related) just blast it to hell with a .50 or something!

It is easy to fix. If it is set off like a land mine then get some iraqie criminals to walk infront of the convoyes. if they are not then you strap them to the sides of the truck and the underneith.
