I'm sorry if this question has been asked before but I wanted to see if there can be any actual confirmation or documentation on this.
I've heard that a new Mossberg 590 is safe to store/carry with a round in the chamber due to them being "drop safe". Is this true? I did a search and found nothing but speculation.
I'm trying to decide if I want my HD shotgun to be stored with a round in the chamber, safety on, or empty chamber and safety off. It will be stored in a "gun grabber" - vertical retention - next to the bed while I am home (otherwise in a safe).
Thanks in advance,
Dope

I've heard that was the case, due to military specifications for their combat shotguns, but I have no idea if its true or not.

Various folk here and there on the web say so, but I don't see anything direct from Mossberg to that effect. Of course, with their new website design, it's pretty difficult to extract ANY basic information from there...

You know, I think I might just email Mossberg and see what they say. I will post back anything I get.
Thanks,

I store mine magazine full, chamber empty, safety off. It doesn't take long to chamber a round. I don't trust any long gun to be "drop safe".

I have a 590 A1 DA. It is a double action trigger. I keep it loaded with a round in the chamber.

FYI, I got response back from Mossberg. Not exactly detailed but take it how you will:
Thank you for your e-mail. No, there hasen't been any problems with the shotguns. We don't recommend you leave your gun loaded in doing so you will damage the spring in the magazine tube. If you need further assistance contact us at 1-800-363-3555.

Leaving a round in the chamber will damage the magazine tube spring?
What's up with that?

I'd feel better about dropping a 590 than a Perazzi.

Here's the email I actually sent them. I think they're referring to my desire to leave the shotgun loaded for HD purposes.
Hello,
I have heard a lot of speculation on this subject and thought I would go right to the source to get confirmation.
Do Mossberg 590s (or any of the 500-series for that matter) have drop safeties? Is there anything preventing the shotgun from firing if it is dropped with a shell in the chamber? Furthermore, does Mossberg recommend storing the shotgun with a shell in the chamber? Theoretically this would be for a home-defense shotgun that would be stored, loaded, on a rack. I don’t want to have to worry if it’s going to go off if it accidentally gets knocked over/falls off the rack.
I’d like to know what kind of protection (if any) there is from an accidental discharge in this situation and what Mossberg recommends
