Through extensive use of the SEARCH function I've learned that the more worn a break-open shotgun is, the more to the left of 6 o'clock the lever becomes.
Mine is at 6:15 or so...
How much farther will it go before I need to find a good local gunsmith?

Hard to say, but a trip to your local smith is in order anyway.
All old shotguns should be checked out by a competent smith before firing.
A PITA? Sure. So is reconstructive surgery.

just because the lockup is loose, it doesn't mean you have trouble, just a worn gun.The real problems are if your gun is "off face".
Follow Dave's advice take it to a smith who knows doubles.
