ARGH!!! Almost got a USP today...

So, I'm over at one of the shops today, talking to the guy about what 9mm I should get. I tell him that I want to spend under $500. He tells me to turn around, and when I turn back there are 5 guns sitting on the counter.

Beretta 92FS
Glock 17
Glock 19
Sig 229 (maybe 228)
H&K USP

He tells me to pick each one up, point them, and tell him which feels best. It was the USP, by far. Now, I've been doing my homework and I know that the USP and the Sig are out of my range. I tell the guy "I really love the USP, but I just can't do it". He tells me that he'd sell it to me for $569.

I just didn't have it, otherwise I would have snapped it right up... who cares if it breaks my budget? But alas, not enough money. It'll be another month before I can scrape that together, and I doubt I can talk him back down to it again.

Damn, being a poor college student has foiled my plans again!

Alright, I'm done whining. Thanks for reading :)

If you really are in that tight of a budget you might also need to factor in the H&K USP mags which cost @$40-50 depending on where you get them compared to Glocks $15-20, SIG/Beretta's MecGars $15 Factory $30. Something to think about.

Playing the devil's advocate though...... the amount of money you spend on ammo through the life of the gun is gonna far outweigh the amount you spend for the gun itself. So might as well get the one you want. The H&K USP. You could get another gun but you'll constantly be pining for the one you really wanted. This might be the only handgun for awhile. You won't be happy with any other.

On the flip side. What if you spent more for the USP and when you actually shot it compared to a Glock, Beretta, or SIG you've discovered the USP wasn't worth the premium? And what if it simply doesn't impress you as much as you thought it would?

But really, very few people who own USP's are unsatisfied with them. I say treat yourself and get the USP somehow.

Check CDNN. They were running some pretty good sales on USP's last time I looked. Think they were running around $470 for some of the full size models.

The usp is great, and you'll never regret eating rice for 3 months to help fund it.

I bought my first USP while I was a student. Hint: used ones sometimes go for less. If you are sold on the gun, go to the shop and put 20% or more down on it to show the salesman your intent. Explain your situation. Chances are good he'll hold it and allow you to pay the balance next month.

Mags can be had for less than $40. Hit the gun shows or check out CDNN.

If you buy the 9mm, you can use .40 mags and squeeze a few more in (or so I've been told).

If you really want the bug, go over to hkpro.com and let the good folks there convince you of the immediate need you have to sell all your worldly posessions to aquire as many HK's as possible.

I've currently got the usp compact in .40cal. It is by far, the most accurate and well built automatic I have shot. It never hangs up, It points perfectly for me, recoil is easy to manage, and mag changes are fast with the paddle lever.

One thing to consider. From your post, it looks like you're looking at the full sized usp? If so, it is a large pistol, limited to 10 rounds of 9mm. If you think you may need to carry it, you may want to look around for the usp compact. Just a thought.

Good Luck,

I jumped on one of those used USP's from CDNN a while ago, I wanted a 9mm, but for the price, I couldn't pass it up, and when I got it, it looks new. So I have no complaints at all for a USP under $500.

Dude! For $569 it's a steal! Put it on layaway and save the extra cash. You won't regret it.

But alas, not enough money. It'll be another month before I can scrape that together What's one month, if you can get what fits you to a tee....

Save up some more, so you'll get to enjoy one, if not the best, of the modern pistols out there ;)

Dude, thats a great deal for a USP, I paid 699.00 for mine. I almost got a glock for a bit less, but I knew I would have to replace the sights immediately, and possibly the barrell. Plus, the HK felt better, and IMHO its build better...Never know when you wanna feed some 45 super through it!

Well, unfortunately, I missed my chance. I went back out there today to try to put some money down on it, and he told me that the price he quoted was below his cost and he wasn't going re-make the offer. Oh well.

Some people mentioned used .40's from CDNN... That thought intrigues me, because (I think) .40 will make Major Power in IPSC, right? That'd be nice... at not much additional cost for ammo.

Aww man that really stinks.

If I were you I'd keep my eye on the hkpro.com boards. there are USPs for sale there usually one or two per two weeks at around 550$. Most of these people are HK owners and take very good care of their pistols.

I'm typing this message right now with a USP 9mm Stainless that I bought from HKPRO strapped to my side. $599 for it and its function and appearence are both flawless.

vanbeast, the dealer sounds like a jerk; no, make that A JERK. Find another dealer. If it was below his cost, he never would have made the offer in the first place! You don't stay in business selling things cheaper than what you paid for them. Find another dealer.

Vanbeast,
Yes, .40 cal makes major in IPSC. The USP is suitable for L10 and in production division.
I'll also vote for saving some more $$, and get what you really want and be done with it.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda.
Didn't.
I paid $830 for my USP compact .45 two-tone.
Money well spent, in my eyes.

Doc Walther in Texas has the compact listed at $569. I've bought a couple of guns from him - fast shipping and good prices. http://saxetshows.com/docw01.htm

There are a bunch of them on gunbroker http://www.gunbroker.com/
- from $550 and up. I didn't look at all of them, there are 5 pages of them.
I've got one of the compacts in 45, it does point very well. It's also the only one of my 45's (Colt, Kimber, Sig, Glock) that has never failed to work. I've got around 6k rounds thru it.
