Just picked up a beautiful model 28-2 "Highway Patrolman" .357 with a 6" barrel. It was new in the box. Brought it to the range today and I am thorougly impressed!!! (I HAD to shoot it, it was calling my name!!!) What a sweet shooting firearm!!! This one is definitely staying in the collection. My question is, can anyone tell me what year this was manufactured? I've tried doing some research, but have not been able to come up with anything. The S/N is N29199x

The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson says 1974-1977 (for the entire N2XXXXX series).
Congratulations on the 28-2. They are a great revolver.

I traded a firearm that I didn't care for to acquire a Mod. 28-2 with a 6" barrel today. My first center fire hand gun was the same thing in 1974. Somehow or another it got away from me and I acquired a 4" in about 85', but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I did the 6".

The one I got today is in 98% condtion and I can't wait to shoot it! The N frame rules and tames full house .357 loads. For years the Mod. 28 was overshadowed by the Mod. 27 (a great hand gun) and later the Mod. 19. IMO, ounce for ounce, the Mod. 28, with its durable finish is the best platform for shooting the .357. The 6" barrel gives me the sighting platform that I want and the balance that "feels" just right. "Go ahead, make my day!":)

I have a 4" model 28-2 and I LOVE IT! I will pick up a 6" big brother when I find one for the right price.

I'm going to date myself but I can vividly remember the California Highway Patrolmen when they used to tote this "hog-leg" as standard issue. Intimidating? Oh good grief, yes.
