depends on the rate of twist of the barrel. Most hawken's aren't designed for sabots. If you want, spend the $10 on a package of sabots and see how they shoot

My thoughts exactly.

What's the worst thing that could happen?

You waste a morning at the range and make some smoke?

Sounds like a good deal to me regardless of how the sabots shoot!

You can figure out the twist yourself.

Twist is stated like "One in 48". That means that the rifling makes one complete turn in 48 inches.

If you take a brush or a tight jag/patch on your rod, you can watch the rod turn as the patch follows the rifling down the bore.

Measure how far you have to move the rod to get one turn.

If you can't get one full turn, measure how far you move the rod to get 1/2 turn.

One half turn in 24" is the same as one in 48". Get it?

I've seen plastic sabots get stuck in barrels. That'd be a pain to get out of a hawken, harder than getting out of a normal inline.

Most "Hawken" rifles sold 20 years ago were essentially knockoffs of the Thompson/Center "Hawken."

It's likely you will find that the barrel has a 1 in 48" twist, like the T/C and all the copies that have been made over the years.

1 in 24" was not a common twist then.

Note that I use quotes around Hawken. These rifles are not replicas of original Hawkens. The Lyman Plains Rifle is much more like an actual Hawken rifle from the 1830s than the guns sold as "Hawken" rifles. I am not familiar with the CD gun, specifically.

Anyway, the T/C was designed for use with round balls for recreational shooting and lead conicals for hunting. T/C Maxi Ball and Maxi Hunter bullets were designed to work well in these rifles.

That said, you could try using lead bullet sabots like Cheap Shots. It should be easier to extract them with a standard ball puller. Or get a CO2-powered unloading thingie, whatever they're called.
