Open sights for a Savage 110 (with no existing sights)?

I have a Savage 110 in .260REM that I love and it's got a cheapo scope on it right now and no open sights of any kind. I've got a Rem700 in 30-06 with a nice scope that I use for longer range field work. What I'd like to do is turn the Savage into the sort of beast that I don't have to worry too much about dragging through the think brush and is great a short-mid distance as well as fairly weather resistant. Step one is to move the cheapo scope to my 10/22 and put quality open sights on Savage.

Step two is open sights for the Savege.

Does anyone have suggestions for after-market open sights that would work well for field work (short-range whitetail) as well as 100-200 yard range work? I'm looking for something rugged, but not so ruggedized as to compromize it's range-worthiness. I've never used peep sights, but I'm not averse to the idea. Do they work well for field work? I would think that they would reduce your field-of-view. The muzzle doesn not have any existing front sight. Is this something that an ameteur gunsmith can tackle or should I seek expert installation?

You thoughts are much anticipated!

I'm having OldTimer's about names for after-market sights. Lyman and ??? "Go Google!"

A competent gunsmith can do drilling and tapping for a screw-on front sight, if the barrel isn't already tapped. Same for a rear sight, whether on the barrel or the rear of the receiver. I imagine some a-m sights will fit the existing rear scope-mount holes.

Go to the Brownell's web site or catalog and you'll find several options. For low-buck utility it's hard to beat the Williams line. Open or receiver rears, and both ramps and bead/blade fronts for almost any rifle. The catalog even has charts with suggested combos and FS heights, and on how to measure and calculate the amount of correction needed if your rifle won't zero with what you've got.

You ought to be able to get a good, servicable set of irons on your rifle for about $60-75 including the fees for having them installed.

Thanks all. Now I guess I need to find a good gunsmith!
