Anyone know what steel puma used or uses in their lock back folding hunters? Bought one 20 years ago. Best blade I've had. Would like to know steel type for future knife purchases.

It looks like all their stuff is D1.4 Stainless. I don't know what that means or if it was even in existence 20yrs ago. I can tell you I have 3 Puma knives and they are great. None of them are folders though.

The old Puma's were good----the new ones are junk----don't waste your time.

I'd have to disagree with your remark. Pumas are still made in Solingen Germany, which is the sword/knife center of Germany. They still make knives traditionally rather than import from China and can be very expensive as a result.

Germans don't like to change much, which is why their designs & choice of steels may be older than here in the USA where we tend to march like lemmings towards the "latest & greatest" new fashionable steel, but the steels used in Puma knives will still stand up to hard use.

I've got a thirty year old Puma lockback and it is still one of the sharpest knives I've owned. Great steel and an even greater locking mechanism. One great knife.
