Weekend Wordplay--Firearms expressions in everyday useage?

July 11, 2003, 10:21 PM
How many expressions in the English language can we identify that are in common useage today? Since I start, I get some of the easier ones though I'll keep trying:

Flash in the pan
Straight shooter
Gunning for
Keep your powder dry

Take it away. . . .

(Edited to add italics--no I'm not machinegunning new terms in here!)

I dunno, that's kind of a long shot.

Scintillate, scintillate, globule vivific,
Fain would I fathom thy nature specific,
Loftily poised in ether capacious,
Strongly resembling a gem carbonaceous.

July 11, 2003, 10:32 PM
Usually used when preparing for some action, buy not necessesarily involving firearms:

Lock and load.

July 11, 2003, 10:35 PM
Mis-fire. If it's a date that went bad, maybe it's miss-fire.

July 11, 2003, 10:41 PM
If guns are banned this powder keg will go off.

I'd take a shot in the dark . . .
but I'd just be stooting off my mouth.

Shooting from the hip, Tamara came up with some pretty wry observations in a debate at The Firing Line concerning whether the 1911 had stifled autopistol innovation. She scored a direct hit on several of the more bombastic posters, targeting both sides of the shoot-out.

This game makes me want to go bust some caps!

Lock, stock, and barrel

Lucky shot

July 11, 2003, 11:01 PM
Memory is not what it was so I'll bite the bullet ............ tho I could rifle thru my journals (sorry!).:p

This is a game of Russian Roulette

July 11, 2003, 11:10 PM
Well most of this anti stuff would be just a "flash in the pan " if the media wasn't so "milatent (sp),and dancing in blood "! They want to take us out "Lock, stock and barrel , and leave us nothing!

This is a time to keep the powder dry , praise the lord (whichever one you believe in) and pass the ammunition.

July 11, 2003, 11:19 PM
I dunno Freedspeak, it looks like you shot your wad early by resorting to several terms already in play.

Aim higher or hold your fire.:neener:;)

July 11, 2003, 11:21 PM
Riding Shotgun

July 11, 2003, 11:24 PM

You looked loaded for bear but half-cocked was in the lead post.:D

July 11, 2003, 11:34 PM
I'll take a shot at this, but if I miss the target don't blast me.:D

July 11, 2003, 11:40 PM

I don't believe I "shot my wad" with that post,it "it was a ranging shot"!

True I may have gone off "half-cocked ", but put it down to "Kentucky windage" , I had missed the reference and was adjusting the shot! :D [

July 11, 2003, 11:41 PM
How about, "The Whole Nine Yards?"

July 11, 2003, 11:42 PM
I'm looking at my biceps right now. They call me Barrett Skunk because of my big guns :uhoh:

July 11, 2003, 11:45 PM
Man, even I am starting to shoot blanks! Don't worry, I'm sure I'll draw a bead and bag a few more.:D

There have been some loose cannons here firing broadsides without checking their aim.:D

July 11, 2003, 11:51 PM

You mean you never put a "shot across the bow " to warn them?

Come on an old Navy man like you should have a few more! ;)

(ex-navy self(short timer))!:D

July 11, 2003, 11:53 PM
HEY!!! Quit the sniping and the potshots or I'll fill you full of lead!:D

July 12, 2003, 12:03 AM
Now your getting into it, just quit "shooting from the hip " and get a good "picture".

As my father used to say to the scouts" Ready on the left, ready on the right, beware of windage and elevation,,,, commence fire!"

I just hate when folks take " pot shots ".:)

July 12, 2003, 12:07 AM
Not too quick on the draw there Freedspeak, shoot from the hip was already used. Now you've gone and shot yourself in the foot not once, but twice.:D

July 12, 2003, 12:08 AM
I had this girl in my sights, till I found out that she would recoil with fear
at the mention of bugs....never did come to grips with it.

July 12, 2003, 12:14 AM

Too bad about that girl, now you'll have to play with your own ramrod.

(Mods--if this one is over the line, please delete it rather than lock the thread. Thanks.)

July 12, 2003, 12:15 AM
Well, I guess as a smith I just have "too many irons in the fire " to keep track.:) I may have "shot myself in the foot " but at least I'm "on target " with the line of the thread!:D

Now let's focus on "keeping our powder dry " and not "sniping " at each other.

Be back with more terms later in the AM.:D

July 12, 2003, 12:19 AM
My wifes thinks that I am a tight wad!

Hey Boats........

July 12, 2003, 12:20 AM
Take care Freedspeak. Don't go ballistic while thinking up more terms.:D

July 12, 2003, 01:18 AM
I used to be a young gun ,but now I'm just a dud !

July 12, 2003, 01:44 AM
Flash in the pan

July 12, 2003, 10:35 AM
Well, ain't you a pistol! Hot as a two-dollar pistol. I sometimes want to post a long rant here, a real broadside !

July 12, 2003, 11:18 AM
Early on this was a turkey shoot, but it is getting harder. Both "flash in the pan" and "broadside" had been used.:D

July 12, 2003, 11:26 AM
I'll shoot you an E-Mail, and let you know how I feel about it!!

July 12, 2003, 12:01 PM
If I am On The Mark with this post I will Hit 'em with both barrells and get a Bullseye!

Everybody needs to be aware of their surroundings or they might find themselves in the cross hairs.

July 12, 2003, 03:07 PM
I know there's one out there that hasn't been posted yet, but I just can't seem to draw a bead on it...

July 12, 2003, 04:12 PM
That was certainly no trick shot because "draw a bead" was already in play.:D

July 12, 2003, 08:47 PM
Cocked, locked, and ready to rock.

July 12, 2003, 10:41 PM
Well I'm not going to recoil from the scope of this thread.

Anyone remember the old Hunter and Beretta TV series?

How about the Sears Spring catalogs?

I'm glad I put the hammer down to get back home to catch this thread.

July 12, 2003, 11:06 PM
He sold his business lock, stock, and barrel.

He was struck at point blank range.

July 12, 2003, 11:14 PM
I'm going to go shotgun a beer and pull the trigger on this thread.

July 13, 2003, 12:19 AM
You guys seem to have used up all the ammunition here and I am under the gun to contribute.

July 13, 2003, 12:22 AM
Well, I'll be a son of a gun -- you guys have hit them all!

July 13, 2003, 03:32 AM
"I am completely out of verbal ammunition. That has never happened before." - slightly paraphrased Burt Gummer.

All those anti-self-defense gun-control fascists sure seem to have a hair-trigger temper when discussing gun control with freedom lovers.

They're very quick on the draw to use ad hominem attacks.

When it's time to to get out the big guns in a debate, they always trot out their "for the children" line.

But since none of their arguments will stand up to scrutiny on its own, they generally argue using a shotgun approach.

July 13, 2003, 02:24 PM
Often times the Anti-Gunner types figure if they put enough lead in the air, their bound to hit something when it comes to legislation.

July 13, 2003, 02:32 PM
Oops, Boats is right; I've been outgunned!:o :D

July 13, 2003, 07:30 PM
"Short round."

From artillery not loaded properly and falling short of the objective.

The term "flinch" now means more than reacting to shot being fired.

July 13, 2003, 07:38 PM
Am I weapons free?

July 14, 2003, 01:44 AM
Far, far too many loose cannons here!

Matt G
July 14, 2003, 03:12 AM
This thread grew pretty fast. Boats, et al really put the hammer down.

July 14, 2003, 04:24 AM

I can't believe everyone overshot this thread without mentioning a cheap shot.

If you think you are right then STICK TO YOUR GUNS.
Dont GUN the engine it wastes gas.
Stay out of the rain and KEEP YOUR POWDER DRY.
I have my goal IN MY SIGHTS.
Set Your SIGHTS on that girl.
Thats really scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Wonder if the hotshot mods are riding shotgun here?
Hope none of the members are shooting up...
Aw, shoot, that's all I can think of.
