Weekend Wordplay--Firearms expressions in everyday useage?
Boats
July 11, 2003, 10:21 PM
How many expressions in the English language can we identify that are in common useage today? Since I start, I get some of the easier ones though I'll keep trying:
Bulletproof
Flash in the pan
Straight shooter
Half-cocked
Gunning for
Keep your powder dry
Take it away. . . .
(Edited to add italics--no I'm not machinegunning new terms in here!)

Scintillate, scintillate, globule vivific,
Fain would I fathom thy nature specific,
Loftily poised in ether capacious,
Strongly resembling a gem carbonaceous.

Shooting from the hip, Tamara came up with some pretty wry observations in a debate at The Firing Line concerning whether the 1911 had stifled autopistol innovation. She scored a direct hit on several of the more bombastic posters, targeting both sides of the shoot-out.
This game makes me want to go bust some caps!

Well most of this anti stuff would be just a "flash in the pan " if the media wasn't so "milatent (sp),and dancing in blood "! They want to take us out "Lock, stock and barrel , and leave us nothing!
This is a time to keep the powder dry , praise the lord (whichever one you believe in) and pass the ammunition.

I dunno Freedspeak, it looks like you shot your wad early by resorting to several terms already in play.
Aim higher or hold your fire.:neener:;)

I don't believe I "shot my wad" with that post,it "it was a ranging shot"!
True I may have gone off "half-cocked ", but put it down to "Kentucky windage" , I had missed the reference and was adjusting the shot! :D [

Now your getting into it, just quit "shooting from the hip " and get a good "picture".
As my father used to say to the scouts" Ready on the left, ready on the right, beware of windage and elevation,,,, commence fire!"
I just hate when folks take " pot shots ".:)

Not too quick on the draw there Freedspeak, shoot from the hip was already used. Now you've gone and shot yourself in the foot not once, but twice.:D

Well, I guess as a smith I just have "too many irons in the fire " to keep track.:) I may have "shot myself in the foot " but at least I'm "on target " with the line of the thread!:D
Now let's focus on "keeping our powder dry " and not "sniping " at each other.
Be back with more terms later in the AM.:D

All those anti-self-defense gun-control fascists sure seem to have a hair-trigger temper when discussing gun control with freedom lovers.
They're very quick on the draw to use ad hominem attacks.
When it's time to to get out the big guns in a debate, they always trot out their "for the children" line.
But since none of their arguments will stand up to scrutiny on its own, they generally argue using a shotgun approach.

Often times the Anti-Gunner types figure if they put enough lead in the air, their bound to hit something when it comes to legislation.

"Short round."
From artillery not loaded properly and falling short of the objective.
The term "flinch" now means more than reacting to shot being fired.

Hope none of the members are shooting up...
Aw, shoot, that's all I can think of.
